Chapter 6 - The Desperate Return

The reality of total financial ruin eventually forced the runaways out of their Mexican hiding place.
Two weeks after fleeing, Ryan boarded an economy commercial flight back to Las Vegas alone.
Vanessa had refused to accompany him, opting to stay behind in a cheap coastal rental while begging her estranged family for emergency loans.
Ryan believed that if he could corner me in private, he could manipulate my emotions just as he had done for years.
He waited outside my consulting firm’s boutique office on Sahara Avenue until my staff had left for the evening.
I was locking the glass double doors when his shadow fell across the threshold.
He looked disheveled, hollow-eyed, and noticeably thinner than the day he walked out.
His confident, condescending demeanor was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, hurried smile.
He took a step toward me, arms outstretched, calling me his sweet Claire.
He claimed that the entire trip had been a catastrophic psychological breakdown brought on by professional stress.
He told me that Vanessa had seduced him, manipulated his vulnerabilities, and convinced him that our marriage was failing.
He begged me to cancel the federal lawsuits, unfreeze the accounts, and allow him to come home to make things right.
I stood completely still, staring at him as if he were a complete stranger encountered on the street.
I asked him if Vanessa had also forced him to steal eight hundred thousand dollars from my corporate escrow accounts over eighteen months.
Ryan’s face drained of color as he realized the depth of the forensic audit we had conducted.
His voice turned sharp, his old defensive arrogance breaking through his desperate facade.
He argued that the money was marital property and that I owed him compensation for prioritizing my career over our home.
He claimed that no decent court would side with a woman who replaced her husband with a notorious corporate brute like Luca Moretti within forty-eight hours.
He grabbed my forearm with sudden, aggressive force, demanding that I listen to reason.
Before I could strike him, a heavy hand clamped down onto Ryan’s wrist with bone-crushing pressure.
Luca stepped out from the corridor shadows, accompanied by two of his personal security operatives.
He twisted Ryan’s arm back with effortless precision, forcing him down onto one knee against the polished floor tiles.
Luca leaned down until his mouth was inches from Ryan’s ear.
He warned Ryan that touching me was a violation that carried immediate, irreversible consequences in this city.
He instructed his men to escort Ryan off the commercial property and hand him directly to the waiting fraud detectives from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Ryan screamed insults as they dragged him toward the service elevator, promising that he would expose us both to the media.
I stood trembling, not out of fear, but from the sudden release of years of psychological manipulation.

Luca wrapped his heavy wool overcoat around my shoulders and held me firmly against his chest.
He promised me that Ryan would never cast a shadow over my life again.
