Chapter 13 - The Poisoned Ledger

Eleanor’s ultimatum hung in the boardroom like a noose, but neither Luca nor I flinched.

Luca stepped out from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows, his imposing frame casting a long silhouette across the table.

"You forget whose city this is, Eleanor," Luca said, his voice dripping with lethal quietness.

"The Vance family built half the foundations of this valley while you were hiding in your European retreats."

"Judges in this district don't bend to ghost trusts filed in tax havens."

Eleanor’s eyes flicked to Luca, and for the first time, a flicker of genuine venom surfaced.

"Ah, Luca Vance," she purred, tilting her head.

"The illegitimate prince of the desert."

"You think your grandfather’s reputation protects you?"

"Check your morning markets, darling."

She turned on her heel, her silk coat billowing, and walked toward the exit without another word.

Her legal team followed her like silent crows.

The moment the doors clicked shut, Gabriel burst into the room holding a tablet.

"Luca, we have a major problem on the East Coast exchange."

A coordinated financial attack had begun at the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange.

A consortium of short-sellers led by an anonymous overseas fund was aggressively targeting Vance Enterprises' publicly traded bonds.

Simultaneously, a front-page exposé had just been dropped on an influential financial news website.

The article alleged that Luca’s private equity firm had engaged in money laundering through gaming operations in Macau five years ago.

The story included copies of financial ledgers bearing Luca’s forged digital signature.

The market reacted with instant panic.

The bond prices were plummeting, threatening to trigger credit default swaps that could freeze Luca’s liquid capital within hours.

Without liquidity, our construction loans for the children's hospital would fall into immediate breach of contract.

"She didn't come to negotiate," I realized aloud, feeling the weight of the assault.

"She set the trap before she even landed her plane."

"She wants to cut off your capital so you cannot fund my legal defense against her trust."

Luca stared at the red lines plummeting across the financial terminal, his jaw clamped tight.

"She thinks she can bleed me dry in one trading session."

"Gabriel, call our brokers in London and Tokyo immediately."

"Authorize a share repurchase program with our offshore gold reserves."

"We will absorb every short position they throw at us."

I watched the man who had pulled me from the darkness fight for his own survival because of me.

I had promised myself that I would never be a liability to anyone ever again.

Ryan had tried to use me as a shield, but Luca had used himself as my sword.

I reached out and touched Luca's arm, pulling his focus away from the chaotic screens.

"Eleanor knows your financial structure, Luca, but she made one critical mistake."

He looked down at me, the tension in his eyes softening slightly.

"What mistake?" he asked.

"She assumed Ryan was a victim of her family trust."

"Ryan was a thief, but he was also a hoarder who kept insurance policies on everyone he feared."

"He didn't fear me."

"He didn't fear the law."

"The only person Ryan ever spoke of with genuine terror was his mother."

"If there is dirt that can tear down Eleanor Bennett, it is buried in the one place she cannot touch."

"High Desert State Prison."
