Chapter 9: The Final Lie
Vanessa walked into my father's office like she owned it.
Maybe she believed she did.
For years, she had manipulated everyone around her.
Her mother.
Her brother.
Her father.
Maybe even my father.
She stopped beside the desk.
"I know you're angry.""
I laughed.
"Angry?""
My voice was calm.
That surprised me.
"No, Vanessa. I'm past angry.""
Her smile faded slightly.
"Good.""
"Because now I want answers.""
She nodded.
"I expected that.""
Ryan stepped forward.
"Why did you do it?""
Vanessa looked at him.
Almost sadly.
"Because nobody ever saw me.""
He stared.
"What?""
She laughed softly.
"Ryan, you were always the perfect son.""
She pointed toward him.
"Smart. Charming. Everyone loved you.""
Then toward herself.
"And I was the daughter nobody respected.""
I almost laughed.
Because Vanessa Whitmore had never looked invisible.
She looked powerful.
"You stole eighteen million dollars because you wanted attention?""
"No.""
Her smile disappeared.
"I stole it because I understood the world.""
Nobody spoke.
She continued.
"People like my father built everything around appearances. Bennett Holdings built everything around trust.""
She looked at me.
"And trust is the easiest thing to destroy.""
I stepped forward.
"You framed me.""
"Yes.""
The honesty shocked me.
"Why?""
"Because your name gave the story credibility.""
She tilted her head.
"A wealthy young woman secretly moving money? People would believe it.""
Ryan looked disgusted.
"You used Maya.""
"I used everyone.""
He shook his head.
"Even me?""
Vanessa's expression softened.
"For a while, yes.""
Ryan looked broken.
I noticed something.
A tiny movement.
A nervous glance toward the door.
She wasn't as confident as she appeared.
She was waiting for something.
"What are you waiting for?""
Her eyes moved to me.
"You really are your father's daughter.""
I ignored the insult.
"Answer me.""
Vanessa smiled.
"The final piece.""
"What piece?""
"The archive.""
My stomach tightened.
"The archive doesn't have anything you need.""
"Actually, it does.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Vanessa.""
She looked at him.
"You should have stayed hidden.""
His expression hardened.
"You tried to kill me.""
She shrugged.
"You survived.""
The casual way she said it made my blood run cold.
Ryan looked at her.
"How could you?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You still don't understand.""
"What?""
"Everything I did was because of people like your father.""
She pointed at him.
"They treated money like it made them important.""
Then she looked at me.
"Your family did the same thing.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Really?""
She smiled.
"Ask Alexander why he hid the truth about Marcus.""
I looked at my father.
His silence hurt.
Again.
"Dad.""
He closed his eyes.
"I didn't steal the money.""
"But you know what happened.""
"Yes.""
"Tell me.""
He looked at everyone.
Then finally spoke.
"Marcus Whitmore didn't steal eighteen million dollars.""
Ryan looked confused.
"Then who did?""
My father answered:
"Vanessa.""
The room froze.
Vanessa smiled.
"Finally.""
I stared.
"But why did you hide that?""
My father looked at me.
"Because Vanessa threatened you.""
My breath caught.
"What?""
"She knew about you. Your identity. Your involvement in the company.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
My father continued.
"She told me if I exposed her, she would destroy your reputation. She would make the world believe you were responsible.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"You blackmailed my father.""
"Yes.""
"And Ryan?""
She looked away.
For the first time, she looked almost human.
"I needed someone close to Bennett Holdings.""
Ryan whispered:
"Me.""
She nodded.
"I knew you would eventually meet Maya.""
The room became silent.
The betrayal was complete.
Ryan sat down.
Like his body couldn't hold the weight anymore.
Vanessa had used him.
Used me.
Used everyone.
But there was one thing I still didn't understand.
"Why did you let me discover everything?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Because I needed you to find the archive.""
"What?""
She smiled.
"The archive has the final proof.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Where is it?""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Your father knows.""
Everyone turned.
My father closed his eyes.
And I knew.
There was still one secret left.
"Dad?""
He didn't answer.
"Where is the archive?""
Finally, he whispered:
"Under the Bennett family estate.""
My heart stopped.
"Why?""
My father looked at me.
"Because that is where your grandfather hid the original records.""
"And why didn't you tell me?""
He looked devastated.
"Because the person who put them there...""
A pause.
Then:
"...was your mother.""
The room went completely silent.
I felt the world shift.
My mother had died when I was young.
I barely remembered her voice.
Her face.
Her hands.
And now everyone was telling me she had been part of this.
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Now you understand.""
I looked at my father.
"Take me there.""
He hesitated.
"Maya.""
"Take me there.""
Because after everything...
After every lie...
After every betrayal...
I needed to know one final truth.
May you like
What was my mother trying to protect?
And why had everyone spent years trying to keep me from finding it?
