Chapter 3: The Secret He Was Chasing
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
The street around us continued moving.
Cars passed.
People walked by.
Someone laughed nearby.
But all I could hear was Ryan's voice repeating in my head.
I know who you are.
I had spent eleven months wondering whether Ryan loved me without money.
Now I wondered whether he had ever loved me at all.
"How long?"" I asked.
Ryan looked confused.
"What?""
"How long have you known?""
His silence was enough.
I nodded slowly.
"That's what I thought.""
"Maya, it's not what you think.""
"Then tell me what it is.""
He ran a hand through his hair.
"I found out a few months after we started dating.""
"How?""
"I saw your name on a document.""
I stared at him.
"A document.""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
He hesitated.
Again.
Always hesitation.
"At an event.""
I laughed quietly.
"You mean an event connected to my company?""
He didn't answer.
The truth finally arrived without needing to be spoken.
I stepped back.
"You didn't fall in love with me.""
"Maya.""
"You found me.""
"No.""
"Didn't you?""
His jaw tightened.
"I didn't plan everything.""
That sentence stayed with me.
Because it wasn't a denial.
It was an admission.
I looked at the man I had trusted.
"Did your family know?""
"No.""
"Did Diane know who I was?""
"No.""
"Did Vanessa?""
"No.""
I studied his face.
"At least you were honest about something.""
He looked hurt.
But I couldn't feel sorry for him.
Not anymore.
"You let them treat me like I was worthless.""
"I didn't know how to fix it.""
"You knew exactly how to fix it.""
I stepped closer.
"You could have said, 'She's the woman I love. Respect her.''"
Ryan looked down.
"I was wrong.""
"Yes.""
A long silence passed.
Then he said:
"I never wanted your money.""
I looked at him.
"Then why were you investigating my company?""
He had no answer.
And that was the answer.
The next morning, I entered Bennett Holdings for the first time in weeks.
Not as Maya, the employee.
As Maya Bennett.
The room changed when I walked in.
People stood.
Assistants moved quickly.
Executives greeted me.
I hated it.
Because suddenly everyone respected me for a reason I had tried to hide.
My father met me in his office.
"You're ready?""
I nodded.
"No.""
He almost smiled.
"Good. That means you're thinking.""
We spent hours reviewing Ryan's connections.
Then we found something.
A payment.
Not from Ryan.
From someone close to him.
Diane Whitmore.
I stared at the screen.
"His mother?""
My father nodded.
"She received money two weeks after Ryan started dating you.""
The betrayal became larger.
Ryan hadn't just hidden information.
His entire family might have been involved.
That evening, I returned to Ryan's house.
Not to forgive him.
To confront him.
Diane opened the door.
Her expression changed instantly.
"Maya.""
No disgust.
No judgment.
Only fear.
Interesting.
"I need to speak with Ryan.""
She swallowed.
"He isn't here.""
"Where is he?""
"I don't know.""
I looked past her.
The same house.
The same hallway.
The same place where she had told me I didn't belong.
Except now she looked like the person who was afraid of being thrown out.
Then my eyes landed on something.
A framed photograph on the table.
Ryan standing beside another man.
The man looked familiar.
I picked it up.
Diane rushed forward.
"Don't touch that.""
Too late.
I turned the frame over.
A name was written on the back.
*Ethan Whitmore.*
I looked at Diane.
"Who is Ethan?""
Her face changed.
The fear became panic.
"Maya, you need to leave.""
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
Then the front door opened.
Ryan walked inside.
He stopped when he saw me holding the photograph.
His expression changed completely.
Not surprise.
Not anger.
Fear.
"Maya.""
I held up the picture.
"Who is Ethan Whitmore?""
Ryan said nothing.
Diane whispered:
"Because if she knows about Ethan, she knows everything.""
I looked between them.
And suddenly I understood.
The missing eighteen million dollars.
The fake identity.
The reason Ryan entered my life.
None of it started with me.
It started with a secret this family had buried years ago.
Ryan slowly closed the door behind him.
May you like
Then he said four words that changed everything.
"Ethan was my brother.""
