Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For five years, Ryan Whitmore had believed his brother was gone.

For five years, Diane Whitmore had mourned a son.

For five years, my father had carried a secret.

And now the man who was supposed to be buried was standing in front of us.

Alive.

I couldn't move.

My mind searched for explanations.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

A stranger who looked exactly like Ethan.

But then he spoke again.

"Maya Bennett.""

Hearing my name from him made my skin tighten.

"You know who I am?""

Ethan looked at Ryan.

"She doesn't know nearly enough.""

Ryan stepped forward.

"Where have you been?""

Ethan's expression changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

"That's your first question?""

Ryan froze.

"I thought you were dead.""

"I know.""

"Everyone thought you were dead.""

"I know.""

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked between them.

"This is impossible.""

Ethan looked at me.

"That's what they wanted everyone to believe.""

I swallowed.

"Who are you?""

A sad smile appeared on his face.

"I'm the man who found the eighteen million dollars.""

Ryan stared at him.

"You found it?""

Ethan nodded.

"And I found out who stole it.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"Who?""

Ethan looked toward the door.

Then back at us.

"Before I tell you, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"I didn't disappear because I was afraid.""

He looked at Ryan.

"I disappeared because someone tried to kill me.""

Ryan went pale.

"What?""

Ethan walked toward the table.

"My car didn't crash.""

The words hit the room like a storm.

Ryan shook his head.

"No.""

"Yes.""

"You said the accident—"

"I let everyone believe that.""

I looked at him carefully.

"Why?""

"Because the person who tried to kill me was someone I trusted.""

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan whispered:

"Who?""

Ethan looked at him.

"Your father.""

Ryan stepped back.

"No.""

"I wish it wasn't true.""

"No.""

Ryan's voice became louder.

"My father died.""

Ethan nodded.

"Yes.""

"Then why are you blaming him?""

"Because before he died, he confessed.""

Ryan looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.

I understood that feeling.

The moment when the person you built your world around suddenly becomes a stranger.

"Where is the confession?"" I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

"Hidden.""

"Where?""

"In the only place nobody would search.""

Ryan frowned.

"Where?""

Ethan didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

"In your company.""

I felt cold.

"My company?""

"The original Bennett Holdings archive.""

My father's old archive.

The place he had stopped using years ago.

"How do you know?""

Ethan reached into his jacket.

He pulled out an old envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

My father.

Marcus Whitmore.

And Ethan.

Together.

The date on the back was five years ago.

I stared.

"My father knew you.""

"Yes.""

Ryan looked at me.

"Your father knew?""

I ignored him.

"What happened that night?""

Ethan sat down.

"Marcus Whitmore didn't start this.""

"What?""

"He was involved. But he wasn't the person controlling everything.""

"Who was?""

Ethan looked at Ryan.

Then at me.

"The person who benefited from both our families destroying each other.""

I waited.

Ethan said one name.

"Vanessa Whitmore.""

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was impossible.

"Ryan's sister?""

Ethan nodded.

"No.""

Ryan shook his head.

"Vanessa?""

"She was never just a spoiled rich girl.""

I thought about Vanessa.

Her comments.

Her confidence.

Her satisfaction when I left the house.

The way she watched everything.

"She knew?""

Ethan nodded.

"She knew everything.""

Ryan looked devastated.

"Why?""

"Because she was the one who discovered the accounts.""

Ethan leaned forward.

"Your father wanted out. He realized what Vanessa was doing.""

"Doing what?""

"Creating fake investments. Moving money through companies that looked legitimate.""

I stared.

"Why frame Bennett Holdings?""

"Because Bennett Holdings had the reputation and resources. People would believe the story.""

Ryan covered his face.

"No.""

Ethan continued.

"Your father was going to expose her.""

"And she stopped him.""

"Yes.""

"By killing you.""

Ethan nodded.

"She tried.""

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

My father's name appeared.

I answered immediately.

"Dad.""

His voice was urgent.

"Maya, where are you?""

"Why?""

"Because someone accessed the archive.""

My heart stopped.

"What archive?""

"The one Ethan mentioned.""

I looked at Ethan.

He knew.

Someone was already there.

"Dad, who accessed it?""

A pause.

Then:

"Vanessa Whitmore.""

The call ended.

Ryan looked at me.

His face was empty.

"She knows.""

Ethan stood.

"She always knows.""

Suddenly, the hotel room lights went out.

The darkness swallowed us.

Then came a sound.

The door locking.

From the outside.

Ryan rushed toward it.

"It's locked.""

I heard footsteps in the hallway.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone wasn't running away.

Someone was coming closer.

Then Vanessa's voice came through the door.

"Ryan?""

Nobody moved.

Her voice was gentle.

Almost loving.

"I know you're in there.""

Ryan whispered:

"No.""

Vanessa continued.

"Maya, I really hoped you would understand eventually.""

My blood ran cold.

Because she didn't sound angry.

She sounded disappointed.

Like I was the one who had done something wrong.

May you like

Then she said:

"You were supposed to stay the poor girl.""
