Chapter 2: The Man Behind The Mask

I didn't sleep that night.

I sat in my apartment with every light turned off, staring at the city below my window.

Normally, Chicago at midnight made me feel alive.

The lights.

The movement.

The endless noise.

That night, everything felt distant.

Because the person I trusted most had suddenly become the person I needed to investigate.

At 7:13 the next morning, my father's private security team arrived.

I hated that.

Not because they were unnecessary.

Because their presence confirmed something I didn't want to believe.

Ryan wasn't just a bad boyfriend.

He might be dangerous.

My father entered my apartment carrying a folder.

Alexander Bennett was sixty years old, but he still carried himself like someone who could command a room without raising his voice.

He placed the folder on my table.

"Maya.""

I looked at him.

"Tell me everything.""

He sat down.

"Three months ago, we discovered irregular transfers from one of our investment accounts.""

"How much?""

"Eighteen million dollars.""

My hands tightened.

"And you think Ryan did it?""

"We don't know yet.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Transaction records.

Then I saw it.

A signature.

Ryan Whitmore.

"No.""

My father watched me carefully.

"You knew him for almost a year.""

"I know.""

"People can hide things for years.""

I closed the folder.

"He never asked me for money.""

"That doesn't mean he wasn't looking for something else.""

The words hurt because they made sense.

That afternoon, Ryan came to my apartment.

I almost didn't open the door.

Almost.

But I needed answers.

When I opened it, he looked exhausted.

His expensive jacket was wrinkled.

His hair was messy.

For a moment, he looked like the man I loved.

Then I remembered the silence.

"Can I come in?""

I stepped aside.

He walked inside.

"Maya, I don't know what happened last night.""

I crossed my arms.

"You don't?""

"No.""

"You watched your mother insult me.""

His face tightened.

"I know.""

"You watched Vanessa humiliate me.""

"I know.""

"And you did nothing.""

Ryan looked down.

"I should have defended you.""

The apology almost worked.

Almost.

"Why didn't you?""

He was quiet.

Finally, he said:

"Because I thought my family would accept you eventually.""

I laughed softly.

"Eventually?""

He looked at me.

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

"Of losing them.""

That answer hurt more than anger would have.

I looked away.

Then he noticed something.

The folder on the table.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

"What is that?""

"Nothing.""

"Maya.""

The way he said my name was different.

Careful.

Controlled.

I smiled.

"Why are you nervous?""

"I'm not.""

"You are.""

He stepped closer.

"I just don't understand what's happening.""

Neither of us spoke.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

"Who is it?"" I asked.

"No one.""

He declined the call.

A second later, the phone rang again.

I saw the name.

Diane.

Ryan turned away.

I didn't know why.

But I knew something was wrong.

After he left, I called my father's lawyer.

I needed the truth.

Not assumptions.

Not emotions.

Truth.

Two hours later, I was sitting in a conference room looking at a timeline.

And the timeline destroyed everything.

Ryan hadn't met me randomly.

He had first appeared near Bennett Holdings six weeks before we met.

He had attended events connected to my company.

He had researched employees.

My lawyer pointed to a document.

"Maya, there's something else.""

"What?""

He slid another paper forward.

A background report.

Ryan Whitmore's name was listed.

But underneath it was another name.

A previous identity.

I stared.

"That can't be right.""

"It is.""

I looked at the photo.

Same face.

Different name.

Different history.

My voice became quiet.

"Who is he?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then my lawyer said:

"Someone who has spent years getting close to wealthy families.""

I felt sick.

That evening, I returned home.

Ryan was waiting outside.

Standing beneath the building lights.

"Maya.""

I stopped.

"Why are you here?""

"Because I need to explain.""

"Then explain.""

He took a breath.

"My family has problems.""

I almost laughed.

"Your family?""

He looked away.

"You don't understand.""

"You're right. I don't.""

He stepped closer.

"I made mistakes.""

"What kind of mistakes?""

His silence answered before his words did.

"Maya...""

My phone buzzed.

A message from my father.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*Don't let Ryan know we found the second account.*

My heart stopped.

Second account?

I looked up at Ryan.

He was watching me.

Too carefully.

Then he said something that made my blood turn cold.

"Maya, I know about Bennett Holdings.""

The world seemed to freeze.

I didn't move.

I didn't breathe.

May you like

Ryan stepped closer.

"I know who you are.""
