Chapter 6: The Trap Closes
I read the message three times.
Not because I didn't understand it.
Because I did.
Someone wanted me afraid.
Someone wanted me to believe that hiding my identity had been a mistake.
Someone wanted me to know they were watching.
I called my father.
He answered immediately.
"Maya?""
"Someone forged my signature.""
Silence.
Then:
"Send me everything.""
I forwarded the photo.
A few seconds later, his voice changed.
"Where did you get this?""
"Ryan sent it.""
Another pause.
"Ryan?""
"Yes.""
My father lowered his voice.
"Do not meet him alone.""
I closed my eyes.
"I think he knows something.""
"That doesn't mean he's safe.""
"I know.""
But the truth was complicated.
Ryan had hurt me.
He had lied.
But he had also warned me.
And somewhere beneath all the anger was a question I couldn't ignore.
Was Ryan Whitmore trying to destroy me?
Or was he trying to save himself?
An hour later, I met him in a private room at a downtown hotel.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I needed answers.
When he walked in, he looked different.
Not like the confident finance executive everyone admired.
Like someone who had finally lost control.
"You came.""
"I almost didn't.""
He nodded.
"I understand.""
I placed the photo on the table.
"Explain.""
Ryan sat down.
"I found this in my father's old files.""
"Your father is dead.""
"I know.""
"Then where did you find it?""
He looked at me.
"In my mother's safe.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
"I broke into it last night.""
"You broke into your mother's safe?""
"I needed proof.""
I studied him.
"And?""
"And I found hundreds of documents.""
"About the theft?""
"About everything.""
He pulled out a flash drive.
"This contains copies.""
I didn't touch it.
"Why give it to me?""
Ryan looked hurt.
"Because Ethan was right.""
"About what?""
He swallowed.
"My family destroyed people to protect themselves.""
The words sounded like they cost him something.
I looked away.
"Why didn't you tell me when you found out who I was?""
His face fell.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"That if I told you, I would lose you.""
I laughed softly.
"You lost me anyway.""
"I know.""
The honesty hurt.
Because it was easier when he lied.
A liar was easy to hate.
A broken person was harder.
Suddenly, the hotel lights flickered.
Ryan looked toward the door.
"What?""
He stood quickly.
"Maya, we need to leave.""
"Why?""
"Because nobody knows we're here.""
The handle moved.
Ryan's face changed.
Someone was outside.
The door opened slowly.
A man stepped inside.
I didn't recognize him.
But Ryan did.
His expression turned pale.
"Ethan?""
The man closed the door behind him.
I froze.
Ryan whispered:
"You're alive.""
The stranger looked at him.
Then at me.
And said:
"I've been waiting five years for someone to uncover the truth.""
My heart stopped.
Because Ethan Whitmore was supposed to be dead.
May you like
But he was standing in front of us.
And the secret he carried was about to destroy everything we thought we knew.
