Chapter 8: The Sister Who Played Innocent
The door opened five minutes later.
Not because Vanessa unlocked it.
Because the hotel security team arrived.
Apparently, Vanessa had enough influence to make people disappear.
But not enough to control everyone.
When the door opened, she was gone.
No struggle.
No evidence.
Just a message left on the table.
A single piece of paper.
Three words.
*Ask your father.*
I hated that message.
Because it worked.
The next morning, I drove straight to Bennett Holdings.
My father was waiting.
But he wasn't alone.
Ethan was there.
And the moment my father saw him, his expression changed.
Not shock.
Recognition.
"You knew.""
My father looked at Ethan.
"I knew you survived.""
Ryan stared at him.
"You knew?""
The anger in his voice filled the room.
"You knew my brother was alive?""
My father looked ashamed.
"I knew he was alive.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Ethan asked me not to.""
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"Of course.""
He looked around the room.
"Everyone has been protecting secrets except me.""
Nobody argued.
Because it was true.
I looked at my father.
"Tell me everything.""
He nodded.
"Five years ago, Ethan discovered the fraud.""
"And you?""
"I discovered it too.""
"Then why didn't you stop it?""
My father looked away.
"Because I was trying.""
"Trying isn't enough.""
"I know.""
His voice became quieter.
"Marcus Whitmore approached me before Ethan disappeared.""
Ryan looked up.
"Why?""
"He wanted protection.""
"Protection from Vanessa?""
My father nodded.
"He knew what she was capable of.""
I felt a strange combination of anger and confusion.
"So Marcus was guilty.""
"Yes.""
"But he wasn't the mastermind.""
"No.""
"Then who helped Vanessa?""
My father hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
"Dad.""
He closed his eyes.
"The person helping her was someone inside Bennett Holdings.""
I froze.
"Who?""
Before he could answer, the office door opened.
My assistant entered.
"Maya.""
She looked nervous.
"We found something.""
"What?""
She placed a tablet on the desk.
"Your signature wasn't the only thing forged.""
I looked at the screen.
There were dozens of documents.
Contracts.
Transfers.
Approvals.
All with my name.
My father looked shocked.
"Impossible.""
My assistant shook her head.
"No.""
She pointed.
"Someone had access to Maya's digital signature.""
My stomach dropped.
"Who had access?""
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan said:
"Someone close.""
Ryan looked at him.
"You mean Vanessa?""
Ethan shook his head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at him.
"Then who?""
Ethan looked directly at my father.
And my heart stopped.
"Alexander Bennett.""
The room went silent.
I stared at my father.
"What?""
Ethan didn't look away.
"Your father had access.""
My father stood.
"That's not true.""
"Then explain why your security ID was used.""
I looked at my father.
"Is it true?""
His face changed.
Not guilt.
Pain.
"Maya.""
"Is it true?""
He didn't answer.
And suddenly, I felt like I was standing in the middle of a battlefield where everyone had chosen their side before I arrived.
Ryan stepped closer.
"Maya, wait.""
"No.""
I looked at my father.
"The one person who told me everyone was lying...""
My voice shook.
"...was lying too.""
My father looked devastated.
"I was protecting you.""
"Everyone says that.""
The room became quiet.
Because everyone had used the same excuse.
Ryan.
Diane.
My father.
Everyone had decided I couldn't handle the truth.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph.
My father meeting Vanessa.
The date was three months ago.
Below the picture was a message.
*Your father didn't protect you. He recruited you.*
I looked up.
My father saw my face.
"What happened?""
I turned the phone toward him.
He went pale.
Then Ethan whispered:
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
"Because that meeting happened after Alexander discovered the truth.""
I looked at him.
"What truth?""
Ethan's expression darkened.
"The truth about who actually stole the money.""
The office door suddenly opened again.
This time, nobody entered.
A voice came from outside.
A voice I recognized.
Vanessa.
"You finally figured it out.""
Everyone froze.
She walked into the room slowly.
No fear.
No panic.
Just confidence.
She looked at me.
"Congratulations, Maya.""
I stared.
"Why?""
May you like
She smiled.
"Because now you're finally ready to hear the truth.""
