Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Arena

Three weeks later,
the Metropolitan District Courthouse was surrounded by hundreds of reporters,
television crews,
and flashing news vans.
The trial of the decade had officially begun:
EMILY CARTER V. DANIEL VANCE & APEX LOGISTICS.
Inside the grand,
wood-paneled courtroom,
the air was heavy with intense tension.
Daniel sat at the defense table,
wearing a plain,
ill-fitting gray prison jumpsuit.
His hands were handcuffed to a heavy iron chain wrapped around his waist.
He looked frail,
drawn,
and exhausted,
having spent the last three weeks inside a concrete holding cell because no bank would approve a loan for his ten-million-dollar bail.
Beside him sat Evelyn,
wearing a cheap dress purchased from a thrift store,
her eyes wide with constant terror.
They were represented by a young,
overworked court-appointed public defender who was frantically flipping through a mountain of legal evidence he had only received forty-eight hours prior.
At the opposing table sat Emily.
She looked radiant,
regal,
and completely dominant.
She wore a sharp,
tailored black pantsuit,
her hair pinned back in an elegant twist.
Flanking her were Arthur Vance and five of the top corporate litigators in the entire country,
their mahogany tables stacked neatly with thick leather legal binders.
The judge,
a stern woman with silver hair and razor-sharp eyes,
struck her wooden gavel against the sound block with a sharp,
resounding crack.
"Order in the court,"
Judge Rebecca Vance commanded loudly.
"We are here today for preliminary motions regarding asset distribution,
corporate fraud liability,
and criminal assault charges."
"Does the defense have an opening statement?"
The young public defender stood up,
his knees visibly shaking as he cleared his throat nervously.
"Your Honor,"
the defender began,
his voice cracking slightly.
"My client,
Mr. Daniel Vance,
admits that there were...
misunderstandings regarding corporate bookkeeping."
"However,
we contend that Miss Emily Carter willingly transferred her personal assets into the marriage."
"Under marital property laws,"
"Mr. Vance was entitled to reasonable access to those funds."
"Furthermore,"
"the alleged assault was merely a minor domestic dispute between a husband and wife in the privacy of their own home."
Judge Vance raised her eyebrows,
her eyes hardening instantly.
"A minor domestic dispute?"
the judge asked softly,
her tone filled with dangerous warning.
Arthur Vance immediately rose from his seat,
adjusting his glasses smoothly.
"Your Honor,"
Arthur declared in a booming,
authoritative voice that filled every corner of the courtroom.
"We would like to enter Plaintiff's Exhibit A into the record."
"It is the full high-definition video and audio recording from the security system of the estate mansion,"
"dated September twenty-seventh at eight-fifteen PM."
Daniel's heart stopped.
He turned his head toward Arthur in utter shock.
"What video?"
Daniel gasped out loud,
his face turning completely white.
"The mansion didn't have cameras in the living room!"
Arthur Vance turned slightly,
giving Daniel a cold,
pitying look.
"The mansion was installed with a state-of-the-art security suite three years ago by Carter Enterprises,
Mr. Vance,"
Arthur explained smoothly.
"You simply never noticed the micro-lenses built into the chandelier frame."
Arthur pressed a button on his tablet.
Two large flat-screen monitors mounted on the courtroom walls flickered to life.
The video played in crystal-clear four-kilobyte resolution.
The entire courtroom watched in dead silence as the scene unfolded on screen.
There was Evelyn,
grinning cruelly,
pressing a handkerchief to her dry eyes.
There was Evelyn's sharp voice echoing clearly through the courtroom speakers:
"Some women marry into wealth and immediately forget their place... You are barren... Useless... A burden living off my son's money..."
Then came the dramatic climax of the video.
The camera captured Daniel stepping across the polished Italian tiles.
It captured his arm swinging back.
It captured the loud,
sickening crack of his palm striking Emily's face so hard that her head snapped sideways,
her wedding ring cutting into her palm,
drawing blood.
And finally,
it captured Daniel's furious scream:
"Get out of my house! You do not raise your voice at my mother in her own house!"
The entire courtroom gasped in collective horror.
Several jury members covered their mouths,
their eyes wide with disgust as they stared directly at Daniel.
Judge Vance's face turned into a mask of pure,
unyielding rage.
She slammed her gavel down with such force that the sound echoed like a gunshot.
"Is this what you refer to as a 'minor domestic dispute',
Counselor?"
Judge Vance demanded,
her glare piercing through the public defender like a spear.
The public defender slowly sat back down,
closing his folder,
his face completely pale.
"No further questions,
Your Honor,"
the defender whispered,
abandoning all attempts at a defense.
Emily slowly stood up from her chair.
She did not look angry.
She did not look vengeful.
She looked like a sovereign ruler delivering a final judgment upon a fallen peasant.
"Your Honor,"
Emily spoke,
her voice ringing with absolute clarity.
"For three years,"
"I allowed this man and his mother to live in luxury because I believed in the sanctity of marriage."
"I paid for their food."
"I paid for their clothes."
"I saved his failing company twice."
"I bore their insults in silence because I thought my humility would eventually win their hearts."
"But when he raised his hand against me,"
"he didn't just break a vow."
"He destroyed any right he had to exist in my world."
Emily turned her head slowly,
her icy blue eyes fixing directly onto Daniel's terrified face.
"I do not ask for alimony."
"I do not ask for a settlement."
"I demand the immediate,
total forfeiture of all corporate assets held by Apex Logistics,"
"the immediate liquidation of Daniel Vance's personal holdings,"
"and the full criminal prosecution of both defendants to the maximum extent of the law."
Judge Vance did not hesitate for a single second.
"So ordered,"
the judge declared loudly,
striking her gavel with final authority.
"All assets are seized immediately."
"Bail is permanently revoked."
May you like
"The defendant will remain in custody pending full criminal trial for felony assault and corporate fraud."
"Court is adjourned."
