Chapter 12 - The Public Media Ambush

By mid-afternoon,
the news trucks had gathered outside the grand entrance of the Imperial Club.
Evelyn Vance had somehow managed to contact a sensationalist tabloid journalist.
Desperate for money and public sympathy,
she had agreed to do a live,
on-camera interview right on the steps of the prestigious club where Emily was dining.
Evelyn stood before three rolling cameras,
wearing a dirty,
oversized sweater provided by the shelter.
Her hair was unkempt,
her face pale,
and her posture completely bent.
"Look at me!"
Evelyn wailed dramatically into the microphones,
squeezing out fake,
strained tears for the lens.
"I am an elderly woman!"
"I gave everything to my family!"
"And now,"
"my cruel,
heartless former daughter-in-law,
Emily Carter,"
"has thrown me onto the freezing streets!"
"She stole my son's company!"
"She locked us out of our family estate!"
"She put my poor boy in prison on fake charges!"
"She is a monster hiding behind billions of dollars!"
The reporters scrambled forward,
flashing their cameras in Evelyn's face,
shouting questions all at once.
Suddenly,
the grand glass doors of the Imperial Club opened.
Julian Thorne walked out first,
his face completely ghost-white,
his hands shaking uncontrollably as he clutched a legal folder.
Only ten minutes inside with Emily had resulted in Vanguard calling in his firm's fifty-million-dollar emergency debt.
He didn't even look at the cameras;
he sprinted straight toward his black sedan and sped away into the traffic.
A second later,
Emily Carter stepped out into the bright daylight.
She was surrounded by four imposing bodyguards,
wearing a sharp,
tailored burgundy suit that made her look like royalty.
The reporters instantly turned their cameras away from Evelyn,
rushing toward Emily like a wave of hungry wolves.
"Miss Carter!"
a reporter yelled.
"Your mother-in-law claims you systematically ruined her life!"
"How do you respond to allegations of heartless cruelty?"
Emily stopped gracefully at the top of the marble steps.
She did not dodge the cameras.
She did not hide behind her security guards.
She looked directly into the primary news camera,
her expression calm,
dignified,
and totally supreme.
"Arthur,"
Emily said softly.
Arthur Vance immediately stepped forward,
holding a tablet connected to the live broadcast feed of the news networks.
"If the press wishes to discuss cruelty,"
Emily announced,
her clear voice echoing effortlessly over the crowd,
"let us examine the verified bank statements of Mrs. Evelyn Vance for the past thirty-six months."
With a tap on the tablet,
high-resolution documents were beamed instantly to every major news network covering the scene.
"Over three hundred thousand dollars was stolen from my company's reserves,"
Emily explained,
her eyes fixing on the trembling Evelyn.
"Funds that Mrs. Vance spent on fifty-thousand-dollar spa trips,"
"designer handbags,"
"and private yachts,"
"while my former husband actively physically abused me in our home."
The crowd of reporters gasped loudly,
looking down at their live tablets confirming the forensic financial trail.
"Mrs. Vance was not thrown onto the street,"
Emily added quietly,
looking directly into Evelyn's horrified eyes.
"She was removed from my private property after participating in corporate grand theft and domestic abuse."
"I have donated five million dollars this morning to the City Women's Emergency Shelter—"
"the very shelter Mrs. Vance currently resides in—"
"so that actual victims of violence may receive true help."
Evelyn stood frozen on the sidewalk,
the cameras surrounding her now capturing her utter deceit and exposed greed.
The reporters began shouting at Evelyn now,
asking her why she had lied on national television.
Evelyn covered her face in complete disgrace,
stumbling backward into the mud as the news crews swarmed her with merciless questions.

Emily stepped smoothly into her waiting limousine,
leaving the public square behind without looking back once.
