Chapter 13 - The Auction of Ultimate Humiliation

Three days later,
the Grand Bankruptcy Court hosted the mandatory public auction for all personal property seized from Daniel Vance and Evelyn Vance.
The event took place inside the central exhibition hall,
filled with high-society collectors,
pawn brokers,
and curious onlookers.
Dozens of glass cases displayed Evelyn's former jewel collection,
her rare designer purses,
and Daniel's high-end watches and custom artwork.
Evelyn sat in the very back row of the gallery,
wearing a plain grey coat,
hiding her face behind a low hat.
She had snuck inside,
unable to resist the morbid urge to watch the auction of her beloved possessions.
She watched as the auctioneer raised his wooden gavel.
"Item forty-two,"
the auctioneer announced loudly.
"A rare eighteen-karat gold diamond necklace,"
"formerly belonging to Mrs. Evelyn Vance."
"Starting bid,"
"ten thousand dollars."
Evelyn's heart bled inside her chest.
That necklace had cost ninety thousand dollars when Daniel had bought it with Emily's money.
"Ten thousand!"
a voice called out from the front row.
It was Arthur Vance,
representing Vanguard Global.
"Ten thousand dollars to the gentleman in the front,"
the auctioneer called out.
"Do I hear twelve?"
Silence filled the room.
Nobody wanted to bid against Vanguard Global.
"Going once,"
"going twice,"
"sold for ten thousand dollars to Vanguard!"
The gavel fell with a loud crack.
For the next two hours,
the exact same pattern repeated itself continuously.
"Item forty-three,"
"custom emerald ring—sold to Vanguard for five thousand dollars!"
"Item forty-four,"
"designer leather wardrobe collection—sold to Vanguard for three thousand dollars!"
"Item forty-five,"
"luxury sports sedan—sold to Vanguard for fifteen thousand dollars!"
Evelyn clutched her head in her hands,
tears of pure humiliation streaming down her face.
Vanguard was buying back millions of dollars' worth of her life's pride for pocket change.
When the final item was sold,
Emily Carter slowly stood up from her front-row seat.
She turned toward the crowd,
stepping up to the auctioneer's microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen,"
Emily said smoothly,
her voice filling the hall.
"All items purchased today by Vanguard Global will not be kept."
"The jewelry will be melted down,"
"its precious stones sold,"
"and one hundred percent of the proceeds will be placed into a scholarship fund for underprivileged young women."
"The luxury cars and clothing will be liquidated for public charity."
The entire audience stood up,
erupting into thunderous applause and wild cheers for Emily's overwhelming philanthropy.
Evelyn sat frozen in the back row,
realizing that every single vanity piece she had spent years bragging about...
was being erased,
melted,
and transformed into a monument for Emily's public glory.
She let out a soft,
broken sob,
May you like
slipping out the back exit into the alley,
leaving behind the last remnants of her fake royal life.
