Chapter 3 - The Illusory Kingdom

On the top floor of the prestigious Apex Tower,
Daniel was sitting at his grand mahogany desk,
nursing a pounding headache.
He was leaning back in his leather chair,
replaying the events of the previous evening in his head.
He felt no regret for slapping Emily.
In his mind,
she had crossed a line by raising her voice at his mother.
She was just a quiet girl from a modest background who ought to be grateful for the life he provided.
He assumed she was currently crying in some cheap motel room,
waiting for him to call so she could apologize and beg to come back.
"Let her suffer for a few days,"
Daniel thought to himself,
taking a sip of black coffee.
"She'll realize how harsh the real world is without my money."
Suddenly,
the double doors of his executive office were thrown open without a knock.
His Chief Financial Officer,
Mark,
rushed inside,
his tie undone,
his face pale as a sheet.
"Daniel!"
Mark gasped,
clutching a stack of urgent financial documents.
"We have a catastrophic problem!"
Daniel frowned,
setting his coffee cup down with an irritated clack.
"Mark,
learn to knock."
"What could possibly be so urgent?"
"The liquidity injection!"
Mark shouted,
placing the papers flat on Daniel's desk.
"The monthly one-hundred-thousand-dollar cash reserve transfer from Vanguard Holdings just failed!"
"Not only failed—it was completely revoked!"
Daniel waved his hand dismissively.
"It’s just an administrative glitch from Investor X."
"Call the bank and clear it up."
"It’s not an administrative glitch,
Daniel!"
Mark’s voice cracked with pure panic.
"Vanguard Holdings didn't just stop the transfer."
"They issued an emergency freeze on all line of credit accounts linked to our firm!"
"And that’s not all!"
Before Daniel could process the words,
his desk phone rang furiously.
It was his mother screaming about her black card being declined at the jewelry boutique.
"Daniel,
what is going on?"
Evelyn demanded over the speakerphone.
"Fix my allowance right now!"
"I am standing here looking like a beggar!"
While his mother was screaming,
a loud knock sounded at the office door.
Two men in sharp charcoal suits entered,
carrying formal legal notices in leather folders.
"Daniel Vance?"
the lead man asked coldly.
"Yes,"
Daniel said,
his heart starting to thud against his ribs.
"Who are you?"
"We represent Vanguard Global Asset Management,"
the lawyer stated,
placing a thick document directly in front of Daniel.
"We are serving you with an immediate breach of covenant notice."
"Your corporate lease for these office premises has been revoked."
"You have forty-eight hours to vacate this building."
Daniel stood up so fast his chair rolled back into the wall.
"Vacate?"
"Are you insane?"
"I own this company!"
"I built this business!"
The lawyer gave a cold,
pitying smile.
"You built the operations,
Mr. Vance."
"You never owned the asset."
May you like
"And as of eight o'clock this morning,"
"the Chairwoman of Vanguard Holdings has ordered a complete liquidation of your debt."
