Chapter 16 - The Phantom Shareholder's Gambit

The marble halls of Vance Corporate Tower,
now officially renamed the Emily Carter International Center,
glowed under the soft brilliance of modern glass fixtures.
Outside,
a light evening rain washed over the city skyline,
mirroring the cold,
unwavering determination in Emily’s chest.
It had been six months since Daniel’s conviction,
and the world had quickly adapted to Emily's absolute dominance.
Yet,
in the dark corners of the financial world,
there were still remnants of the past attempting to claw their way back.
Arthur Vance walked briskly into the private executive lounge,
holding a thick leather binder stamped with red wax.
"Miss Carter,"
Arthur said quietly,
his tone holding a rare note of genuine concern.
"We have a legal challenge from an unexpected source."
Emily did not flinch,
nor did she pause in signing the acquisition papers on her desk.
"Who is foolish enough to step into the arena now,
Arthur?"
she asked softly.
"Charles Vance,"
Arthur replied,
placing the binder on her desk.
"Daniel’s uncle."
"The exiled brother who fled to Switzerland eight years ago after a failed embezzlement scheme."
Emily raised her eyes,
a faint,
amused smile touching her lips.
"What claim could Charles possibly have?"
"He claims to hold a legacy bearer bond,"
Arthur explained,
flipping to a scanned copy of an old parchment certificate.
"A document signed by Daniel’s late father twenty years ago,"
"which supposedly guarantees him twenty percent of all subsidiary holdings under the Vance family name."
"He arrived in the city two hours ago,"
"accompanied by a team of predatory corporate attorneys."
"He has already called a press conference for tomorrow morning,"
"claiming that you stole his family's birthright while his nephew was helpless in prison."
Emily closed her pen with a quiet,
satisfying click.
"Charles Vance believes that because Daniel was a weak fool,"
"the rest of the family can play the victim."
"He thinks he can use public pressure to extract a multi-million dollar settlement from Vanguard."
"Does he realize who funded his comfortable lifestyle in Zurich for the past five years?"
Arthur smiled softly,
shaking his head.
"He assumes it came from Daniel's corporate profits,
ma'am."
Emily stood up slowly,
smoothing down the lapels of her tailored ivory blazer.
"Send Charles an invitation to my private board suite tonight,"
she commanded,
her voice like velvet over steel.
"Let him bring his lawyers."
"Let him bring his pride."
"By midnight,"
May you like
"he will realize that the Vance family legacy was built entirely on my foundation,"
"and that digging up old graves only buries the living."
