Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Ruins

The sun rose over the vast city skyline,

casting cold golden light onto the floor-to-ceiling glass of Vanguard Headquarters.

Emily Carter stood quietly near her mahogany desk,

holding a cup of hot black tea in her hands.

Her gaze was calm,

focused,

and unwavering.

Behind her,

Arthur Vance entered the executive suite silently,

holding a thin navy blue leather folder.

"Miss Carter,"

Arthur said softly,

bowing his head respectfully.

"We have a slight development regarding the bankruptcy liquidation of Apex Logistics."

Emily took a slow sip of her tea,

not turning around immediately.

"Who is trying to interfere,

Arthur?"

she asked quietly.

"Julian Thorne,"

Arthur replied,

opening the folder.

"The CEO of Thorne Capital."

"He has quietly submitted a bulk bid to acquire the remaining operational logistics hubs of Daniel's former company."

"He believes that with Daniel in prison,"

"the assets can be bought for ten cents on the dollar."

"He also released a private statement to our creditors,"

"suggesting that Vanguard's total control over the liquidation is predatory."

Emily turned around slowly,

a cold smile playing at the corners of her lips.

"Julian Thorne,"

she murmured,

remembering the arrogant corporate raider who had once tried to squeeze her out of a shipping contract five years ago.

"He thinks Daniel's downfall leaves a power vacuum that he can fill."

"He believes I am merely an emotionally driven ex-wife,"

"reeling from a messy divorce."

"Precisely,

ma'am,"

Arthur said,

handing her the financial dossier.

"He has already placed fifteen million dollars in escrow with the bankruptcy court."

Emily looked at the numbers on the paper,

her eyes narrowing slightly.

"Julian Thorne's firm relies heavily on short-term high-interest credit lines,"

"underwritten by the European Merchant Syndicate,"

"does it not?"

Arthur smiled,

his eyes twinkling behind his rimless glasses.

"Yes,"

"Miss Carter."

"And who purchased seventy percent of the European Merchant Syndicate's debt obligation last Tuesday?"

"You did,"

"ma'am."

Emily walked over to her desk,

setting her teacup down on a marble coaster with a quiet,

satisfying click.

"Call Julian Thorne,"

Emily instructed,

her voice smooth as silk and cold as ice.

"Tell him I am willing to meet him for lunch today at the Imperial Club."

"Let him think he is negotiating with a woman who is ready to compromise."

"And Arthur?"

"Yes,"

"Miss Carter?"

"Prepare the immediate acceleration clause on his syndicate loans."

"By the time dessert is served,"

"Julian Thorne will realize that touching Daniel's scraps was the biggest mistake of his life."
