Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Nobody slept.
Not after the video.
Not after realizing someone had been inside our home before I returned.
Not after discovering that my family’s secrets had been watched by someone else.
The house that once felt safe now felt like a trap.
Every shadow looked like a person.
Every sound felt like a warning.
I sat at the kitchen table with the evidence spread around me.
Documents.
Photographs.
Letters.
Fifteen years of lies.
My mother sat across from me.
For the first time in years, I was sitting beside the woman I thought I had lost forever.
But instead of comfort, I felt confusion.
“You should hate me,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“I don’t know what I feel.””
She nodded.
“That’s fair.””
Michael sat beside her.
My brother looked older than his age.
Eight years behind a wall had changed him.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes from our childhood.
“Who is she?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Finally, my mother said:
“Her name is Claire.””
The name meant nothing.
“Who is Claire?””
My mother looked at my father.
“She was my sister.””
I stared.
“You have a sister?””
“She died before you were born.””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“She didn’t.””
My father stood suddenly.
“Enough.””
I turned toward him.
“You know her.””
He said nothing.
My mother continued.
“Claire discovered what your father was doing before I did.””
“What was she involved in?””
My mother looked down.
“The business.””
I frowned.
“Again?””
She shook her head.
“Not just the business.””
She pulled out another document.
A birth certificate.
I looked at it.
The name made my heart stop.
Claire Anderson.
Mother’s sister.
And below it…
A child.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
My mother whispered:
“Claire had a daughter.””
My father’s face changed.
I noticed.
“You know who she is.””
Silence.
Then my father said:
“She’s dangerous.””
Michael stood.
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
And said:
“Your cousin.””
I stared.
“I have a cousin?””
“She was hidden from everyone.””
“Why?””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she knew the truth.””
The room became quiet.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa grabbed Lily.
My father stepped forward.
And I saw something I never expected.
Fear.
Real fear.
A woman walked into the house.
She looked around thirty.
Calm.
Confident.
And completely familiar.
Because I had seen her before.
Not in person.
In photographs.
She was the woman standing beside my father in an old family picture.
The woman I thought was my mother.
But she wasn’t.
She looked at me.
“Hello, Mark.””
My voice barely worked.
“Who are you?””
She smiled.
“Someone your family erased.””
My father whispered:
“Claire.””
The woman laughed.
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“My name is Emma.””
Then she placed a folder on the table.
The same kind of folder my father had used.
“I came here because you deserve the truth.””
I stared at her.
“What truth?””
She opened the folder.
Inside was a DNA report.
My eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
The result was impossible.
I looked at my mother.
Then at Michael.
Then at Emma.
The final line destroyed everything I thought I knew.
*Relationship probability: 99.9%.*
Emma smiled.
“I’m not your cousin, Mark.””
May you like
She leaned closer.
“I’m your sister.””
