Chapter 10: The Daughter Nobody Knew

The word echoed in my mind.

*Sister.*

I stared at Emma.

A stranger who had walked into my home.

A stranger who carried proof that my entire family history was a lie.

“No,” I whispered.

Emma’s expression didn’t change.

“I knew you would say that.””

I looked at my father.

His face was pale.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that told me more than any document could.

“You knew,” I said.

My father looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I picked up the DNA report.

“My whole life has been built on secrets. My brother was alive. My mother was alive. Now I have a sister I never knew existed.””

I looked at him.

“And you knew about all of it.””

My father remained silent.

Emma walked farther into the room.

“I spent my entire life knowing I had a brother who didn’t know I existed.””

She looked at Michael.

“And another brother who was willing to expose the truth.””

Michael stared at her.

“You knew about me?””

Emma nodded.

“I watched from a distance.””

His expression hardened.

“Then why didn’t you help me?””

Pain crossed her face.

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone was afraid.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had watched while my family collapsed.

I slammed the report onto the table.

“I want the truth. Right now.””

My mother looked at me.

“Mark…”

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more protecting me. No more deciding what I can handle.””

I pointed at my father.

“Start with him.””

The room went quiet.

My father looked older than he had minutes before.

Finally, he sat down.

“Emma was born before I met your mother.””

I stared.

“My mother knew?””

He nodded.

“She knew everything.””

Emma folded her arms.

“She knew because she helped hide me.””

I looked at my mother.

“Why?””

My mother looked ashamed.

“Because your father convinced us it was the only way.””

My father interrupted.

“I was trying to protect her.””

Emma laughed.

“Protect me?””

Her voice shook.

“You abandoned a child.””

My father looked at her.

“You were never supposed to be involved.””

“Because I was proof.””

The room became silent.

“Proof of what?”” I asked.

Emma looked at me.

“That your father had another life.””

I felt sick.

My father had built an entire world around himself.

A perfect image.

A respected businessman.

A devoted father.

But underneath was something rotten.

“Why hide me?”” Emma continued.

“Because when my mother died, I found documents.””

“What documents?””

She looked at my father.

“The ones proving he was responsible for everything.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Everything?””

Emma nodded.

“The money laundering. The fake accounts. The accident.””

My father stood.

“That’s enough.””

“No,” I said.

He stopped.

For once, my voice controlled the room.

“Let her finish.””

Emma opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

One showed my father meeting someone.

A man I didn’t recognize.

Another showed bank transfers.

Another showed a hospital record.

My hands shook.

“What is this?””

Emma answered:

“The night your mother disappeared.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“She wasn’t running away.””

I looked at her.

“Then what happened?””

She took a breath.

“Your father tried to kill me.””

The room went silent.

Even my father looked shocked.

“You survived,” he said.

My mother looked at him.

“Because Claire saved me.””

I looked at Emma.

“Your mother?””

She nodded.

“She found me after the crash.””

“Crash?””

My mother looked at me.

“The same crash everyone thought killed Michael.””

I felt dizzy.

“Wait.””

I looked between them.

“My mother was there?””

“Yes.””

“Michael was there.””

“Yes.””

“And my father…”

My mother finished the sentence.

“He planned it.””

My father shook his head.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Emma stepped forward.

“I know exactly what happened.””

She pulled out a small audio recorder.

“This is why I came tonight.””

She placed it on the table.

“What is that?””

“Your father’s confession.””

My father’s face changed.

For the first time, he looked trapped.

Emma pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

His voice.

“I had no choice.””

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“I couldn’t let them expose me.””

My heart raced.

Then another voice appeared.

A woman’s voice.

Young.

Afraid.

My mother.

“Please stop.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

My father stared at Emma.

“Where did you get that?””

She smiled sadly.

“From the one person you forgot to destroy.””

“Who?””

Emma looked at me.

“Your sister.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

The sound came from my father’s coat.

He reached inside.

I moved instantly.

“Don’t.””

He slowly pulled out the phone.

One message appeared.

He looked at the screen.

May you like

And for the first time…

My father looked afraid of someone else.
