Chapter 14: The Truth We Buried

The device sat on the table.

Small.

Simple.

Almost harmless.

But I knew better.

Everything in my family that looked harmless had destroyed someone.

My grandfather stepped back.

“Watch it.””

I looked at my father.

He couldn’t meet my eyes.

That was my answer.

I pressed the button.

The screen came alive.

A younger version of me appeared.

Seventeen years old.

I looked so different.

Younger.

More confident.

More trusting.

The boy on the screen sat across from my mother.

“I found everything,” young me said.

My heart tightened.

My mother looked terrified.

“You need to leave.””

“I’m not leaving you.””

The video changed.

Another scene.

Michael.

My brother.

Standing beside me.

We were holding documents.

The evidence.

The truth.

“We have enough,” Michael said.

Young me nodded.

“We go to the police tomorrow.””

I closed my eyes.

I remembered.

Pieces.

Small pieces.

A sound.

A smell.

A feeling.

But nothing complete.

Then my grandfather appeared in the video.

The room went silent.

Young me stood.

“You.””

My grandfather smiled.

“You boys really thought you won.””

Michael stepped forward.

“You’re finished.””

My grandfather laughed.

“No.””

Then the video changed.

A struggle.

A crash.

A scream.

My mother.

And then…

Darkness.

I stopped the recording.

I couldn’t watch anymore.

My father whispered:

“Mark.””

I turned toward him.

“You let him do this.””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I was scared.””

“You watched.””

“Yes.””

“You helped.””

His silence confirmed it.

My anger disappeared.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I finally understood.

My father wasn’t a monster born that way.

He was someone who surrendered to one.

I looked at my grandfather.

“You erased my memory.””

He nodded.

“Your father helped.””

“Why?””

“Because you refused to become like me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My grandfather smiled.

“You were the only one who could destroy everything.””

I looked at Lily.

She was watching silently.

I realized something.

My grandfather had underestimated one thing.

He thought kindness was weakness.

But kindness was exactly what had brought us here.

My daughter.

My brother.

My mother.

Everyone he tried to erase.

“You lost,” I said.

My grandfather laughed.

“You still don’t understand.””

He pointed at the device.

“That memory was not the truth.””

I froze.

“What?””

He smiled.

“It was only what I wanted you to see.””

The room went silent.

My father looked up.

“What did you do?””

My grandfather walked toward Lily.

“Your son always needed proof.””

He looked at me.

“So I gave him some.””

My blood ran cold.

“You changed the recording.””

“Yes.””

“Then where is the real one?””

He smiled.

“Your mother has it.””

Everyone turned.

My mother looked shocked.

“I don’t.””

My grandfather laughed.

“She doesn’t even know she has it.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

He walked toward the exit.

“You really thought your mother disappeared for fifteen years just to hide?””

The lights flickered.

A door opened behind him.

Then he said:

“The person who has controlled this family for years was never me.””

Everyone froze.

My grandfather looked at my father.

“Ask him who your real enemy is.””

Then he disappeared.

I turned slowly.

Toward my father.

“What is he talking about?””

My father looked broken.

And finally said:

“Your mother wasn’t hiding from my father.””

May you like

A pause.

“She was hiding from me.””
