Chapter 4: The Man in the House

The footsteps downstairs stopped.

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

The entire house felt like it was holding its breath.

I stood in the hallway with the photograph still clutched in my hand, listening to the sound of someone moving through the home I had lived in for twelve years.

My home.

My safe place.

But suddenly every locked door, every quiet corner, and every strange moment with Vanessa felt different.

“Mark,” Vanessa whispered.

I looked at her.

Her face was pale.

“Take Lily upstairs.””

The fear in her voice told me everything.

She wasn’t pretending anymore.

She wasn’t hiding anything.

She was terrified.

I stepped in front of my daughter.

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

A floorboard creaked downstairs.

Someone was walking toward us.

Michael grabbed the edge of the wall to stand.

“You need to get out.””

I looked at him.

“You’ve been trapped here for eight years. I’m not leaving you.””

His eyes filled with emotion.

“You still don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

The footsteps got closer.

Then a voice echoed from the bottom of the stairs.

“Mark?””

My blood froze.

I knew that voice.

Not from the phone.

Not from memories.

From the present.

My father’s voice.

“Come downstairs, son.””

Lily buried her face against my side.

“Daddy, is Grandpa alive?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how to explain something that should have been impossible.

I slowly moved toward the staircase.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because that’s what he wants.””

I pulled away.

“I need answers.””

Michael stepped beside me.

“No. You need proof.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“My father spent his entire life controlling people with fear. If you go down there angry, he wins.””

The voice called again.

“Mark, I know you’re there.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“How does he know?””

Nobody answered.

Then I noticed something.

A small red light blinking near the ceiling.

A camera.

I stared at it.

“He’s been watching us.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I told you.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew about cameras?””

She looked ashamed.

“Some of them.””

My anger returned.

“You knew he was spying on us?””

“I knew after Lily found Michael.””

I stepped closer.

“And you still stayed?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he threatened to hurt you.””

The answer stopped me.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“He said if I left, if I went to the police, if I told you the truth… he would destroy everything.””

A laugh came from downstairs.

My father had heard.

“Still protecting her, Vanessa?””

Her body shook.

The voice continued.

“You were always weak.””

I walked downstairs.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

At the bottom, I saw him.

Standing in the living room.

Older than I remembered.

Thinner.

But alive.

My father looked exactly like a ghost that had decided to return.

He smiled.

“Hello, son.””

I stared at him.

“You’re dead.””

He tilted his head.

“Apparently not.””

I wanted to attack him.

I wanted answers.

I wanted to know why he had stolen eight years from my brother.

Instead, I asked the only question that mattered.

“Why?””

His expression changed slightly.

“Because Michael betrayed me.””

“You locked your own son behind a wall.””

“I saved the family.””

I laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

My father walked closer.

“Your brother was about to destroy everything.””

“What everything?””

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

“You found your mother’s letter.””

My chest tightened.

“How did you know?””

He smiled.

“Because I knew you would.””

I felt sick.

“You planned this.””

“No.””

He looked toward the stairs.

“I simply knew you would eventually discover the truth.””

Michael appeared behind me.

“You’re a monster.””

My father looked at him.

“You should be grateful.””

“For what?””

“For breathing.””

The room became silent.

I stepped forward.

“You don’t get to talk to him like that.””

My father looked at me carefully.

“You still think you know who the villain is.””

I shook my head.

“I know exactly who the villain is.””

His face hardened.

“No, Mark. You know who I wanted you to see.””

Then he reached into his coat.

Vanessa gasped.

I moved instantly.

But he didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small folder.

May you like

And placed it on the table.

“Inside this folder is the reason your brother was never supposed to come home.””
