Chapter 6: The Truth Michael Hid

I had spent the last hour believing Michael was the victim.

My brother.

The man who had been trapped behind a wall.

The man my family had mourned.

The man my daughter had secretly saved.

But now he stood in my living room, staring at a confession with his name on it.

And he looked afraid.

Not angry.

Not confused.

Afraid.

“Michael,” I said quietly.

He didn’t look at me.

“Tell me the truth.””

My father watched from across the room.

Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

Lily held onto my hand.

Michael finally spoke.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.””

My heart sank.

“Find out what?””

He closed his eyes.

“That I wasn’t completely innocent.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

I stepped back.

“What did you do?””

Michael sat down slowly.

“The night I disappeared…”

He looked at the floor.

“I went to meet Dad.””

My father smiled.

“Finally.””

Michael ignored him.

“I had the evidence.””

“The money?””

He nodded.

“But I also found something else.””

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“Mom’s medical records.””

I felt cold.

“What about them?””

“She wasn’t sick.””

The room went silent.

My father’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

“You’re lying,” he said.

Michael looked at him.

“No. I found the reports.””

I looked between them.

“Explain.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Mom’s heart condition wasn’t natural. Someone had been giving her medication that made her weaker.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I couldn’t move.

“My mother was poisoned?””

Michael nodded.

“I thought Dad did it.””

My father laughed.

“You thought?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“That’s why I confronted him.””

I stared at my father.

“And then?””

Michael’s voice became quieter.

“He told me I didn’t understand.””

A long silence followed.

“Then what happened?””

Michael looked at me.

“He showed me something.””

“What?””

“He showed me evidence that someone else had been changing Mom’s medication.””

My father looked at me.

And said:

“Ask him who.””

I turned back.

Michael’s face had lost all color.

“Michael?””

He swallowed.

“It was…”

He stopped.

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought it was you.””

The room stopped.

“What?””

Michael shook his head quickly.

“I was wrong.””

“Why would you think that?””

“Because Dad showed me documents. Messages. Records.””

My father smiled.

“Proof.””

I looked at him.

“You framed me?””

He shrugged.

“I showed your brother what he needed to see.””

Michael stood.

“I didn’t know what was real.””

“So you disappeared?””

He nodded.

“I was going to take the evidence to the police.””

“And?””

“My father found out.””

The room went quiet.

“He followed me.””

Michael looked toward the hidden room.

“He brought me here.””

I looked at my father.

“You trapped him because he knew too much.””

My father shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Michael.

“I trapped him because he was about to accuse the wrong person.””

I hated that part of me wanted to believe him.

Because nothing made sense anymore.

Then Vanessa suddenly walked toward the table.

“There’s one thing neither of you know.””

Everyone looked at her.

She picked up the confession.

“This document…”

She pointed at the signature.

“It’s fake.””

My father’s expression changed.

“How would you know?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because I created it.””

The room went silent.

I stared.

“What?””

She began crying.

“I was trying to protect Michael.””

Michael looked shocked.

“You?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father forced me to write it.””

My father’s face hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No,” Vanessa whispered.

“I made the mistake eight years ago when I helped you hide the truth.””

My chest tightened.

“Vanessa…”

She looked at me.

“I need to tell you everything.””

Then the lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Lily screamed.

A second later, my phone lit up.

One new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

And my blood turned cold.

It was a photograph.

Taken moments ago.

A picture of my house.

From outside.

With someone standing in the yard.

May you like

The message underneath said:

*“Your father is not the only person who came back from the dead.””*
