Chapter 11: The Person Pulling the Strings

My father stared at the phone.

Nobody moved.

I had spent my entire life believing my father was the person everyone feared.

The strongest person in every room.

The person who always had control.

But now I saw something different.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Who sent that message?””

My father looked at me.

And whispered:

“Someone worse than me.””

Nobody expected those words.

Not even him.

Emma crossed her arms.

“I knew it.””

I turned.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“The person behind everything never wanted your father exposed.””

My mother looked confused.

“Who?””

Emma looked at the phone.

“The person who has been cleaning up his mistakes.””

Michael frowned.

“You mean he wasn’t working alone?””

My father laughed quietly.

“No.””

His voice was empty.

“I was never the one in control.””

That sentence changed everything.

I looked at him.

“You’re saying someone controlled you?””

He looked at me.

“Everyone has someone they fear.””

I thought about all the years.

The lies.

The disappearances.

The hidden rooms.

The fake deaths.

“Who?””

My father didn’t answer.

Then the phone buzzed again.

A new message.

I grabbed it before he could.

The screen showed a photo.

A picture of Lily.

Taken inside the house.

My blood turned cold.

The message read:

*“Bring me the evidence, or the child pays for your mistakes.””*

“Lily.””

I ran.

Up the stairs.

“Lily!””

Vanessa screamed from the hallway.

“Mark!””

I reached her bedroom.

The door was open.

The room was empty.

The window was unlocked.

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Vanessa collapsed against the wall.

“She was right here.””

I searched the room.

The bed.

The closet.

The bathroom.

Nothing.

Then I saw something on the floor.

A small piece of paper.

My daughter’s handwriting.

I picked it up.

*Daddy, someone told me Uncle Michael needed help. I thought I was helping.*

My hands shook.

Michael came running.

“No.””

He grabbed the paper.

“She trusted someone.””

My father appeared behind us.

His face changed when he saw the note.

“Who took her?””

He didn’t answer.

I turned.

“You know.””

His eyes moved away.

“You know who took my daughter.””

“Mark…”

I grabbed his shirt.

“You have five seconds.””

My mother and Vanessa pulled me back.

But my father looked at me differently.

Not like a son.

Like someone finally worthy of the truth.

“The person who took Lily…”

He swallowed.

“Is the person who taught me everything.””

The hallway went silent.

“Your grandfather.””

I stared.

“My grandfather died before I was born.””

My father nodded.

“Exactly.””

Nobody spoke.

Emma looked horrified.

“He’s alive?””

My father nodded slowly.

“He never died.””

I felt the world spinning again.

Another dead person.

Another lie.

“How?””

My father sat down.

“Because he planned everything.””

Michael stepped closer.

“The accident.””

My father nodded.

“The business.””

Another nod.

“The disappearances.””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“And you helped him.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because when I tried to leave…”

His voice broke.

“He showed me what happened to people who betrayed him.””

A notification appeared on my phone.

A location.

An address.

Then one final message.

*“Come alone, Mark. Your daughter is waiting.””*

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I have to.””

Michael shook his head.

“He wants you alone.””

“I know.””

Emma stepped forward.

“Then you won’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“He’ll expect you.””

She smiled.

“That’s why he won’t expect me.””

I looked at the others.

For the first time in my life, my family was standing together.

Broken.

Damaged.

But together.

Then my father spoke.

“Mark.””

I turned.

His eyes were full of regret.

“Be careful.””

I waited.

He whispered:

“Your grandfather doesn’t want the evidence.””

“Then what does he want?””

My father looked at the message.

“He wants you to know why he did everything.””

A chill ran through me.

“Why?””

May you like

My father answered:

“Because you were never his grandson.””
