Chapter 8 - The Hidden Ledger and the Federal Threat

Wednesday afternoon found me sitting in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of Brooks & Associates, staring at a massive stack of financial documents.
Nathan was pacing the length of the room, his usually perfect tie loosened, his eyes burning with an intense, predatory focus.
"We subpoenaed everything," Nathan explained, gesturing wildly to the mountains of paper covering the long mahogany table.
"Personal accounts, joint accounts, trust funds, offshore holdings, and every single tax return filed since your wedding day."
"And what did you find, Nathan?" I asked, feeling a cold knot of anxiety tightening in the pit of my stomach.
"I found that Vincent Moretti is not just an unfaithful husband; he is a spectacularly reckless criminal," Nathan declared, stopping abruptly and leaning heavily on the table.
He slid a thick, blue-tabbed folder across the polished wood until it stopped directly in front of me.
I opened it cautiously, my eyes scanning columns of complex numbers, shell company names, and massive, unexplainable wire transfers.
"Look at page four," Nathan instructed grimly, pointing his pen at a specific line item highlighted in blinding yellow.
I flipped the page and stared at a document establishing a shadow corporation based in the Cayman Islands, heavily funded by Moretti Holdings.
"What is this?" I asked, my brow furrowing as I tried to decipher the intricate web of financial jargon.
"That is a shell company used specifically to funnel millions of dollars away from the taxable corporate accounts," Nathan explained bluntly.
"It is a classic, highly illegal tax evasion and money laundering scheme designed to hide assets from the federal government."
"But why are you showing this to me in a divorce proceeding?" I questioned, the terrifying reality not fully setting in yet.
Nathan took a deep breath, his expression hardening into one of profound, terrifying seriousness.
"Look at the signature line for the primary beneficiary and sole managing director of that illegal shell company, Claire."
I moved my eyes down to the bottom of the page, tracing the ink to the designated line, and my heart completely stopped beating.
There, written in perfectly forged cursive, was my signature.
Claire Bennett Moretti.
"He used my name," I whispered, all the blood draining rapidly from my face as the horrific implications crashed down upon me.
"He didn't just use your name, Claire," Nathan corrected me, his voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly whisper. "He set you up as the perfect, expendable fall guy."
"If the IRS or the SEC ever audited Moretti Holdings and found this shadow account, Vincent’s hands would be entirely clean."
"The paper trail points directly to you, making you legally and criminally responsible for millions of dollars in corporate tax fraud."
I pushed the chair back and stood up quickly, my chest heaving as panic threatened to completely overwhelm my carefully maintained composure.
"I never signed those documents!" I shouted, my voice echoing off the glass walls of the conference room. "I have never even been to the Cayman Islands!"
"I know that, and any competent handwriting expert will prove it's a blatant forgery," Nathan assured me quickly, trying to calm me down.
"But this severely changes the entire trajectory of our legal strategy."
"We are no longer just fighting for your independence and a clean divorce, Claire."
"We are fighting to keep you out of a federal penitentiary."
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the tiny cars navigating the busy Chicago streets far below, feeling incredibly small and vulnerable.
Vincent had not just betrayed my heart; he had weaponized my identity and actively plotted to destroy my entire future if necessary.
"What is our next move?" I asked, turning back to face Nathan, my fear rapidly crystallizing into a cold, unstoppable rage.
"We do not mention the fraud yet," Nathan advised, picking up the forged document and placing it carefully back into the secure folder.
"We let Vincent and Richard believe they are winning the PR war, and we wait for the perfect moment to drop a nuclear bomb on their entire empire."
"Tomorrow night is the Chicago Children's Hospital Charity Gala," I stated suddenly, a dangerous, brilliant plan forming in my mind.
"You are not seriously considering attending that event," Nathan warned, his eyes widening in shock. "The media will completely devour you alive."

"I am still the official co-chair of that charity, and I refuse to hide in my house like a terrified, guilty victim," I declared fiercely.
"I am going to that gala, Nathan, and I am going to look Vincent Moretti right in the eyes."
