Chapter 10 - The Rival and the Dangerous Proposition

The orchestra was playing a slow, hauntingly beautiful waltz as Julian Vance led me to the very center of the massive, polished wooden dance floor.
Every single eye in the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was absolutely fixated on us, the undeniable tension in the room thick enough to cut with a silver knife.
Julian placed his right hand firmly on my lower back, his touch entirely respectful but radiating an intense, grounding heat through the silk of my crimson gown.
I followed his expert lead effortlessly, our steps perfectly synchronized as we began to glide across the floor under the glittering crystal chandeliers.
"You are causing quite a spectacular scandal tonight, Claire," Julian murmured, his deep voice easily cutting through the beautiful music.
"I merely showed up to support a charity," I replied coolly, keeping my expression perfectly neutral for the hundreds of desperate spectators watching our every move.
"Your husband looks like he is about to have a massive cardiac event near the champagne tower," Julian noted, a brief, dangerous smirk flashing across his handsome face.
"He is currently processing some highly distressing new information regarding his offshore financial stability," I stated plainly, looking directly into Julian's piercing gray eyes.
Julian raised a dark eyebrow, his interest clearly piqued by my blatant lack of fear and my subtle admission of possessing highly damaging corporate intelligence.
"I have always admired your grace from a distance, Claire, but I never realized you possessed such a lethal, calculated edge," he complimented softly.
"Three years in the Moretti family is an excellent, brutal education in the art of corporate warfare and psychological survival," I replied without missing a beat.
Julian pulled me slightly closer as the music swelled, gracefully spinning us away from a cluster of eavesdropping socialites who were trying to inch closer to our conversation.
"I did not ask you to dance simply to annoy Vincent, although I will admit that is a highly enjoyable bonus," Julian confessed, his tone dropping to a serious, business-like register.
"Then why are we standing in the exact center of this room, giving the paparazzi enough material to fuel the gossip columns for an entire year?" I challenged him directly.
"Because I have a highly lucrative, mutually beneficial proposition for you," Julian stated quietly, his eyes scanning the room to ensure absolute privacy before continuing.
"Vance Global has been aggressively trying to orchestrate a hostile takeover of Moretti Holdings for the past eighteen months, but Richard’s financial walls are incredibly thick."
"I need the definitive key to breach his fortress, and I firmly believe that you are currently holding that key in your perfectly manicured hands."
I stiffened slightly in his arms, realizing that Julian Vance was not a knight in shining armor arriving to save me, but a ruthless shark smelling blood in the water.
"And what makes you think I have any interest in helping you expand your corporate monopoly, Mr. Vance?" I asked cautiously, maintaining my fluid movements on the dance floor.
"Because Richard Moretti is currently mobilizing his massive legal team to completely annihilate your reputation, freeze your assets, and bury you in endless litigation," Julian warned correctly.
"You are fighting a highly impressive battle, Claire, but you cannot fundamentally win a protracted war of attrition against a billion-dollar empire completely alone."
"I have Nathan Brooks," I countered defensively, refusing to show him any signs of weakness or desperation.
"Nathan is brilliant, but he cannot protect you from the illegal, off-the-books retaliation that Richard is famous for authorizing," Julian countered smoothly, spinning me out and pulling me back in.
"Hand over the definitive proof of the Cayman Islands fraud that I know you just discovered, and let my team completely decimate their company from the outside."
My breath caught slightly in my throat as I realized how dangerously well-connected Julian Vance truly was to have intercepted that highly guarded information so quickly.
"If I give you the financial ledgers, what exactly do I get in return?" I negotiated, my business instincts sharply kicking in amidst the swirling romance of the waltz.
"You get absolute, ironclad protection from the federal fallout, you keep your North Shore estate, and you get the undeniable satisfaction of watching Vincent lose absolutely everything," he promised darkly.
The music began to slow down, reaching its dramatic, sweeping crescendo as Julian brought us to a graceful, elegant halt in the middle of the floor.
He did not release my waist immediately, maintaining the physical closeness as he waited for my definitive answer.
I looked over his shoulder and saw Vincent standing near the exit, his face completely pale, watching me plot his absolute destruction with his greatest enemy.
I turned my eyes back to Julian, offering him a sharp, beautiful, and completely lethal smile.

"Have your legal team contact Nathan Brooks tomorrow morning, Mr. Vance," I whispered softly as I finally stepped back and politely broke the physical contact.
"We have a lot of highly classified documents to discuss."
