Chapter 5 - The First Strike of Independence

I didn't wait for Richard's explosive reaction or Vincent's desperate pleading as I turned on my heel and marched out of the stifling study.

The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind me with a deeply satisfying, final thud, echoing through the empty halls of the estate.

I walked briskly down the long corridor, my pulse pounding in my ears, adrenaline flooding my veins like liquid fire.

I had finally done it; I had looked the devil in the eye and refused to sell my soul.

Just as I reached the grand foyer, I heard rapid, heavy footsteps rushing down the hallway behind me.

"Claire! Stop!" Vincent yelled, his voice echoing frantically off the marble walls.

I ignored him, pushing the heavy front doors open and stepping out into the freezing afternoon air, desperate to escape the toxic atmosphere of his home.

He caught up to me just as I reached my SUV, grabbing my elbow and spinning me around with surprising force.

"Don't touch me," I warned, my voice low and dangerous as I ripped my arm out of his grasp.

Vincent looked entirely unhinged, his perfect hair completely disheveled, his eyes wild with panic and sudden realization of what he had lost.

"You can't just walk away like this," he pleaded, his arrogant facade completely shattered, leaving a desperate, pathetic man in its place.

"I made a mistake, okay? It was purely physical, it meant absolutely nothing. I will fire Sophia today. Right now."

"It’s far too late for that, Vincent," I replied, looking at him with a mixture of pity and absolute revulsion.

"You didn't make a mistake; you made a choice, night after night, lie after lie. And now, you get to live with the consequences of that choice."

"If you walk away, my father will destroy you," he threatened, pivoting rapidly from pathetic pleading to desperate aggression. "He will hire the best lawyers in the country to drag your name through the dirt and leave you with nothing."

I let out a harsh, dry laugh, pulling open the heavy door of my SUV and looking down at him.

"I am already walking away with nothing but the clothes on my back and the house my father gave me," I reminded him.

"I have nothing left to lose, Vincent. But you? You have an entire empire hanging by a thread, and I am the one holding the scissors."

I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut, ignoring his frantic tapping on the tinted glass as I instructed Marcus to drive.

As the SUV sped away from the Moretti estate, leaving my cheating husband standing in the dust, I felt a massive, invisible weight lift off my chest.

"Where to now, Mrs. Moretti?" Marcus asked from the front seat, glancing at me through the rearview mirror.

"Just Claire," I corrected him gently, pulling my phone out of my bag. "Take me to the North Shore. I want to go home."

The drive to my riverside mansion took forty minutes, giving me time to process the massive explosion I had just detonated in my own life.

By the time we pulled up to the beautiful, historic property my late father had purchased for me, my phone was blowing up with Google news alerts.

The corporate scandal had completely breached the walls of Moretti Holdings and leaked into the mainstream media.

Headlines were flashing across my screen in rapid succession, tearing the Moretti family’s perfect facade to absolute shreds.

'BILLIONAIRE CEO VINCENT MORETTI CAUGHT IN EXPLOSIVE OFFICE SCANDAL.'

'SCORNED WIFE EXPOSES AFFAIR TO 500 EMPLOYEES: MORETTI STOCK PLUMMETS.'

'THE END OF A GOLDEN COUPLE: DIVORCE PAPERS DELIVERED IN COMPANY LOBBY.'

I sat on the front porch of my beautiful, empty house, reading the articles as the sun began to set over the icy Chicago river.

The media was painting me as a scorned, vengeful woman, but I didn't care; they were finally telling the truth about him.

My phone buzzed in my hand, a new message from Nathan Brooks, my ruthless lawyer.

"Vincent's legal team just reached out. They are threatening an emergency injunction to freeze your assets and keep you out of this house."

I smiled softly in the fading light, typing my response with steady, determined fingers.

"Let them try. File the petition, release the photos to the press anonymously, and prepare for war."

May you like

The golden cage was entirely shattered, and the real fight was only just beginning.

I put my phone down, took a deep breath of the freezing air, and finally unlocked the door to my real life.
