Chapter 7 - The Scapegoat and the Secret Recording

By Tuesday morning, the situation at Moretti Holdings had devolved from a scandalous rumor into a full-blown corporate catastrophe.

The company stock had plummeted a terrifying twelve percent the moment the New York Stock Exchange opened for trading.

Investors were panicking, the board of directors was demanding emergency meetings, and the media was swarming the downtown headquarters like vultures.

I sat in my newly organized study, watching the live financial news coverage on a muted television while sorting through stacks of bank statements.

The news anchor's face was grim as the graphic behind her displayed a massive red arrow pointing sharply downward next to the Moretti logo.

Suddenly, breaking news scrolled across the bottom of the screen: MORETTI HOLDINGS TERMINATES EXECUTIVE SECRETARY AMIDST CORPORATE ESPIONAGE ALLEGATIONS.

I grabbed the remote and quickly unmuted the television, leaning forward in my leather chair with intense curiosity.

A sleek, aggressive PR spokesperson for the Moretti family was standing at a podium, reading from a carefully crafted statement.

"Moretti Holdings has officially terminated the employment of Miss Sophia Carter, effective immediately, following the discovery of severe security breaches."

"We have reason to believe Miss Carter was engaging in corporate espionage and attempting to extort our CEO, Mr. Vincent Moretti."

"The rumors regarding an inappropriate relationship were fabricated by Miss Carter in a malicious attempt to destabilize the upcoming Miller acquisition."

I let out a harsh, disbelieving laugh that echoed loudly through the empty study.

Richard Moretti had done exactly what a ruthless patriarch would do; he had completely thrown the vulnerable mistress under the bus to save his son.

He was transforming Sophia from a willing participant in a sordid affair into a criminal mastermind attempting to destroy the company.

It was a brilliant, incredibly evil strategy designed to make Vincent look like an innocent, targeted victim.

Before the press conference even ended, my private, secondary cell phone—a number only a handful of people knew—began to ring violently.

I looked at the unfamiliar caller ID, my instincts immediately screaming that this was not a wrong number.

I picked up a digital voice recorder from my desk, pressed the record button, and answered the phone on speaker.

"Hello?" I said cautiously.

"Claire, please, please don't hang up," a frantic, tear-choked voice begged from the other end of the line.

It was Sophia Carter.

"You have exactly thirty seconds to give me a reason not to terminate this call and block your number," I replied, my voice completely devoid of empathy.

"They are destroying me, Claire," Sophia sobbed loudly, her previously arrogant demeanor entirely broken and replaced by pure panic.

"Vincent promised me he would protect me, he promised we would be together, but security literally dragged me out of the building this morning."

"They confiscated my company phone, my laptop, and now they are threatening to press federal charges for corporate espionage!"

I listened to her desperate crying, feeling a strange, chilling sense of detached vindication.

"And why exactly are you calling the woman whose husband you have been sleeping with for six months?" I asked coldly.

"Because you are the only one who knows the absolute truth!" she practically screamed, her voice cracking with terror.

"You have the private investigator's photos, you know it wasn't extortion, you know we were intimately involved!"

"You have to release the files to the press and prove that Vincent is lying, otherwise Richard is going to send me to federal prison!"

I leaned back in my chair, staring at the spinning red light of the digital voice recorder capturing every single word of her confession.

"Sophia, you made a calculated decision to enter my home, sleep in my bed, and help my husband humiliate me," I reminded her mercilessly.

"You thought the power and the money would protect you, but you forgot that to the Moretti family, you are completely disposable."

"Please, Claire, I am begging you, they are going to ruin my entire life!" she cried, hyperventilating into the receiver.

"Your life was ruined the moment you unbuttoned your blouse in Vincent's office," I stated firmly, ending the call without another word.

I stopped the recording and immediately sent the encrypted audio file directly to Nathan Brooks.

Richard wanted to play a dirty game of public manipulation, but I was quietly assembling an arsenal of undeniable truth.

Sophia was learning the hard way that the golden cage was actually an incredibly dangerous trap.
