Chapter 13 - The Courtroom Bloodbath and the Severed Ties

The towering marble columns of the Chicago Federal Courthouse looked deeply intimidating under the heavy, gray clouds of the Friday morning sky.
I walked up the massive stone steps completely surrounded by a phalanx of private security guards provided by Julian, shielding me from the screaming press.
The media frenzy had reached an absolute boiling point, desperate for a comment from the woman who had single-handedly orchestrated the downfall of a billionaire dynasty.
I maintained a perfectly serene, emotionless expression behind my dark designer sunglasses, refusing to give the tabloids any ammunition to weaponize against me.
When I finally stepped into the grand, wood-paneled courtroom, the oppressive silence immediately swallowed the chaotic noise of the outside world.
Nathan Brooks was already sitting at the petitioner's table, organizing thick stacks of legal documents with the focused precision of a lethal sniper.
I took my seat beside him, smoothing out the dark, tailored fabric of my skirt, feeling an unexpected wave of pure, absolute calm.
Ten minutes later, the heavy wooden doors at the back of the courtroom slowly creaked open, and the heavily guarded prisoners were escorted inside.
Vincent walked in wearing a bright orange, deeply humiliating jail jumpsuit, his wrists shackled to a thick chain wrapping tightly around his waist.
He looked absolutely horrific; his face was gaunt, his eyes were bloodshot from severe lack of sleep, and his arrogant swagger had been entirely erased.
He was forced to sit at the respondent's table next to a frazzled, visibly sweating public defender, as his expensive private lawyers had immediately abandoned him when his funds were frozen.
Vincent slowly lifted his head, his hollow, desperate eyes locking onto mine across the aisle, silently begging for a mercy he absolutely did not deserve.
I stared back at him with a chilling, unapologetic blankness, completely devoid of any lingering pity, love, or even basic human sympathy.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Marcus Thorne," the bailiff bellowed, forcefully shattering the heavy tension gripping the silent room.
The judge took his seat at the high bench, glaring down at Vincent with an expression of profound legal disgust and supreme irritation.
"We are here today to finalize the deeply contested divorce proceedings between Claire Bennett and Vincent Moretti," Judge Thorne announced, his voice echoing loudly.
"Given the severe, unprecedented federal indictments currently pending against the respondent, I am highly inclined to expedite this dissolution of marriage."
Vincent’s public defender stood up quickly, his hands shaking slightly as he attempted to salvage a completely unsalvageable situation.
"Your Honor, my client requests a massive delay in these proceedings to allow him to adequately review the financial division of assets," the lawyer stammered nervously.
"My client asserts that the North Shore estate should be legally considered marital property to aid in paying his severely mounting federal restitution."
Nathan stood up slowly, a deeply predatory smile playing on his lips as he buttoned his perfectly tailored suit jacket.
"Your Honor, the respondent's request is not only legally absurd, it is actively attempting to perpetuate a severe financial fraud upon this very court," Nathan stated smoothly.
Nathan picked up a heavy file folder and handed it directly to the bailiff to present to the intensely curious judge.
"That folder contains the original deed, proving the North Shore property was purchased entirely by the petitioner's late father prior to the marriage," Nathan explained clearly.
"Furthermore, it contains an explosive sworn affidavit from a highly credentialed forensic handwriting expert, alongside verified FBI documentation."
"The respondent deliberately forged the petitioner's signature on highly illegal offshore shell accounts in a pathetic attempt to frame her for his extensive federal crimes."
The entire courtroom erupted into shocked, chaotic whispers as the judge violently slammed his wooden gavel to aggressively restore order.
Vincent completely collapsed into his wooden chair, burying his face in his shackled hands, finally realizing his absolute destruction was highly unavoidable.
Judge Thorne aggressively flipped through the forensic reports, his face turning an angry, volatile shade of red as he processed the sheer magnitude of the deception.
"Mr. Moretti, the audacity you possess to attempt to weaponize this court to steal from the very woman you actively tried to frame for federal felonies is truly astounding," the judge spat violently.
"I am immediately denying your motion to delay, and I am formally granting the petitioner’s request for an absolute, highly immediate dissolution of this marriage."
"The petitioner, Claire Bennett, will retain full, exclusive ownership of the North Shore estate and all independent trust funds entirely in her name."
"Furthermore, I am granting a permanent, highly restrictive restraining order prohibiting you or anyone associated with your family from ever contacting her again."
The judge aggressively slammed the gavel down one final, deeply satisfying time, the heavy crack echoing like a gunshot signaling my complete liberation.
"This miserable farce of a marriage is officially terminated," the judge declared loudly, completely dismissing Vincent as if he were nothing but highly toxic waste.
I stood up slowly, feeling an incredible, overwhelming lightness in my chest, as if a suffocating heavy chain had finally been violently cut from my neck.
As the bailiffs roughly grabbed Vincent by the arms to drag him back to his miserable federal holding cell, he turned back to look at me one final time.
"Claire, please!" Vincent screamed desperately, his voice cracking horribly as the heavy wooden doors forcefully slammed shut, completely cutting him off from my life forever.
I turned to Nathan, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck in a deep, highly emotional embrace of pure, unadulterated gratitude.

"You are officially free, Claire Bennett," Nathan whispered happily, patting my back gently as the courtroom slowly began to empty out.
I walked out of the federal building with my head held high, stepping out into the blinding Chicago sunlight, completely ready to finally start living.
