Chapter 4 - The Showdown at the Moretti Estate

The wrought-iron gates of the Moretti family estate loomed ahead like the entrance to a maximum-security fortress.
Set on forty acres of pristine, heavily guarded land in Lake Forest, the mansion was a sprawling stone monstrosity designed to intimidate anyone who approached it.
As my SUV rolled up the winding gravel driveway, my stomach tightened involuntarily, muscle memory from three years of facing this family's relentless scrutiny.
I stepped out of the car, my black stilettos crunching loudly against the gravel, and clutched the manila folder containing my divorce petition tightly to my chest.
The heavy oak front doors opened before I even reached the steps, revealing the family's long-time butler, Thomas, whose face remained a mask of practiced neutrality.
"Mr. Moretti is expecting you in the main study, Madam," Thomas murmured, bowing his head slightly as I walked past him into the grand foyer.
The house felt colder than usual, the air thick with tension and the suffocating scent of expensive cigar smoke.
I bypassed the lavish living rooms and walked directly down the dimly lit hallway toward Richard's private sanctuary.
I didn't bother to knock; I simply turned the brass handle and pushed the heavy mahogany doors wide open.
The scene inside looked like a heavily staged theatrical production of corporate damage control.
Richard Moretti sat behind his massive desk, his face grim and terrifying, puffing aggressively on a thick Cuban cigar.
Vincent was pacing frantically in front of the fireplace, holding a crystal glass filled with amber liquid, despite it being barely past noon.
And sitting in the corner, perched nervously on the edge of a leather armchair like a frightened bird, was Sophia Carter.
I stopped in the doorway, my eyes locking onto the secretary, a cold fury igniting in my chest.
"I see we are keeping things strictly professional today by inviting the hired help to family meetings," I noted dryly, stepping into the room and closing the doors behind me.
Vincent stopped pacing, his face flushing a deep, angry red as he slammed his glass down onto the mantle.
"Leave her out of this, Claire," Vincent snapped, stepping in front of Sophia as if to protect her from my verbal assault.
"She is the reason we are all here, Vincent," I shot back, walking casually toward the center of the room. "I think she deserves a front-row seat to the disaster she helped create."
"Enough!" Richard roared, his booming voice vibrating the crystal decanters on his desk.
The room instantly fell silent, the patriarch's authority demanding absolute compliance from everyone except me.
Richard glared at me through the haze of cigar smoke, his dark eyes narrowing sharply.
"Sit down, Claire," he ordered, pointing a thick finger at the chair opposite his desk.
"I prefer to stand," I replied, refusing to surrender the higher ground.
Richard's jaw clenched, clearly unaccustomed to blatant disobedience in his own home.
"You have made a colossal mess today," Richard growled, leaning forward and resting his massive hands on the desk.
"You dragged the Moretti name through the mud, panicked our investors, and turned my son into a public laughingstock."
"Your son turned himself into a laughingstock the moment he decided to sleep with his subordinate on company time," I corrected him smoothly, throwing the manila folder onto Richard's desk.
"I simply turned on the lights so everyone could see the joke."
Vincent marched over, his face twisted in desperate rage, pointing a shaking finger at me.
"You are delusional!" Vincent yelled, attempting to gaslight me one final time in front of his father.
"Sophia and I were working late on the Miller acquisition, nothing more. You let your paranoid jealousy destroy a billion-dollar merger!"
I stared at him, genuinely marveling at his pathetic ability to lie even when the building was burning down around him.
I reached into my designer bag and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, holding it up to the light for everyone to see.
"Is the Miller acquisition code for the penthouse suite at the Four Seasons?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
Vincent froze, the color violently draining from his face as his eyes locked onto the small device in my hand.
"Because a private investigator has been documenting your highly intensive 'late-night meetings' for the past four months," I continued, tossing the flash drive onto the desk next to the divorce papers.
"Photos, hotel receipts, credit card statements, and highly inappropriate text messages downloaded directly from the cloud."
Sophia let out a loud, tragic sob, burying her face in her hands as the undeniable proof of her homewrecking was laid bare.
Richard slowly picked up the flash drive, his expression shifting from anger at me to absolute, disgust-filled fury directed at his son.
"You reckless, arrogant idiot," Richard hissed at Vincent, his voice dripping with venom. "You risked the entire company for a cheap fling?"
"Dad, I can fix this," Vincent stammered, stepping backward, suddenly looking like a terrified little boy instead of a CEO.
"I don't care how you fix it," Richard barked, slamming his fist onto the desk. "You will get this woman out of my house, and you will do damage control before the market opens tomorrow."
Richard then turned his terrifying gaze back to me, attempting to salvage his control over the situation.
"How much, Claire?" Richard asked coldly, pulling out a checkbook. "How much to sign an NDA, withdraw the divorce, and play the supportive wife until the merger goes through?"
I looked at the checkbook, feeling a wave of absolute disgust for the moral bankruptcy of this family.

"There is not enough money in your offshore accounts to buy my self-respect, Richard," I stated firmly, turning my back on the patriarch.
"I am leaving, and I will see you in court."
