Chapter 20 - A New Dawn

Three months later,

the morning sun poured brightly through the bay windows of our newly renovated living room.

The air smelled of fresh coffee and blooming jasmine from the garden outside.

Gwen was sitting on the plush velvet sofa,

her hair just starting to grow back in soft, dark curls around her head,

laughing as she read a book.

The scars of the past—the starvation,

the cold concrete floor,

the betrayal of my mother and sister—were nothing more than distant ghosts fading into the rearview mirror of our lives.

My military contract had officially ended,

and I had chosen civilian life,

determined never to spend another day away from the woman who had proven her love through the darkest depths of hell.

The front door chimed softly as the mail carrier dropped off the morning delivery.

I walked over to the front porch,

picked up the mail,

and flipped through the envelopes.

Bills,

advertisements,

and a postcard from an old military buddy.

No more fake bank statements.

No more stolen deployment funds.

No more toxic parasites draining our peace.

I walked back inside,

sat down on the sofa beside Gwen,

and wrapped my arm securely around her waist,

pulling her close against my chest.

Gwen leaned her head gently on my shoulder,

looking up at me with deep, unwavering affection.

"What are you thinking about?"

she whispered softly.

I looked out the window at the bright, beautiful world we had fought so hard to reclaim,

and smiled.

"I was just thinking,"

I replied,

May you like

kissing the top of her head,

"that we finally made it home."
