Chapter 10 - The Stage Is Set

The sun rose with a brilliant, unforgiving glare on the morning of the confrontation.

After ensuring Gwen was settled,

surrounded by top-tier medical staff and explicit instructions that no visitors—especially Margaret or Paige—were allowed under any circumstances,

I left the hospital.

I drove to the county courthouse to meet Captain Miller.

We spent three hours reviewing every single piece of documentation:

the wire transfer logs,

the forged signatures on the property purchase agreement,

the medical denial letters,

and the emergency lien notices.

"The legal case is airtight,

Vance,"

Miller said,

sliding the thick manila folder across the table.

"If they don't sign over the deed and agree to full restitution of the embezzled funds tonight,

the sheriff will slap handcuffs on both of them before breakfast tomorrow morning."

"They'll sign,"

I said coldly,

sliding the folder into my briefcase.

"Greed is their religion.

When they realize the alternative is a prison cell,

they'll crawl through broken glass to save themselves."

"Be careful,"

Miller warned,

giving me a sharp look.

"Desperate people do unpredictable things."

"Let them try,"

I replied,

standing up.

"I've survived worse than two greedy cowards."

I got back into my rental car and drove toward the house.

The final act was about to begin.
