Chapter 15 - The Pen Meets the Paper

The silence in the living room was so thick you could hear the frantic ticking of the wall clock.

Sixty seconds felt like an eternity.

Margaret stared at the pen lying on the coffee table as if it were a venomous snake.

Her hands shook uncontrollably as she looked between the quitclaim deed and my cold, unyielding face.

She realized,

with sudden, crushing clarity,

that there was no escape hatch left.

The military discipline and strategic ruthlessness she had tried to undermine for years had finally turned around to crush her entirely.

"Mom..."

Paige sobbed from the sofa,

her mascara running down her cheeks.

"Just sign it...

please...

I don't want to go to jail..."

Margaret swallowed hard,

her chest heaving with bitter resentment and humiliation.

Slowly,

painfully,

she reached down,

picked up the pen,

and dragged it across the signature line of the quitclaim deed.

Then,

with trembling fingers,

she signed the confession of financial embezzlement.

She dropped the pen as if it burned her flesh and glared up at me with pure, unadulterated venom.

"Are you happy now?"

she hissed,

her voice dripping with malice.

"You've destroyed your own family for a dying stranger."

I picked up the signed documents,

checked the signatures against my master copies,

and carefully slid them back into my leather briefcase.

"My family is currently resting comfortably in a private hospital suite,"

I replied coldly,

May you like

clicking the briefcase shut.

"You two are just former tenants who overstayed your welcome."
