Chapter 16 - The Eviction Executed

I walked to the front door,
pulled it open,
and signaled outward.
Two county sheriff deputies,
who had been waiting parked down the street in an unmarked cruiser,
stepped out and marched up the front steps.
They walked right past me into the living room,
their heavy boots clicking loudly against the hardwood floor.
Officer Miller,
the senior deputy,
looked at Margaret and Paige holding the signed papers I had handed him.
"Margaret Vance,
Paige Vance,"
the deputy stated formally.
"Per the executed quitclaim transfer and the emergency asset forfeiture order,
you are hereby formally evicted from this property effective immediately."
"You can't be serious!"
Margaret screamed,
jumping to her feet.
"We have nowhere to go!
All our things are here!"
"You have exactly two hours to pack your personal belongings into trash bags and vacate the premises,"
the deputy replied without a shred of sympathy.
"Any items remaining after that time will be considered abandoned property seized by the estate."
Paige let out a loud, miserable wail,
falling back against the sofa cushions in utter defeat.
I turned around,
stepped out onto the front porch,
and closed the front door behind me.
The nightmare was officially over for them.

And for Gwen and me,
it was finally time to heal.
