Chapter 18 - Transforming the Sanctuary

By midnight,
the entire house had undergone a radical, violent transformation.
Every single trace of my mother and sister—their framed photos,
their designer shopping bags,
their expensive decorative clutter—had been bagged up and thrown into the municipal dumpster outside.
I hired a professional deep-cleaning and sanitization crew that arrived at 1:00 AM,
scrubbing the floors,
purifying the air ducts,
and transforming the damp storage room back into a bright, beautifully appointed guest suite,
though I knew Gwen would never sleep in a storage room again.
Her new bedroom was now the master suite upstairs,
fully redecorated with warm colors,
soft Egyptian cotton linens,
and a bouquet of fresh white lilies on the bedside table.
I stood in the center of the master bedroom,
surveying the quiet, peaceful sanctuary I had reclaimed for my wife.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand.
It was a text message from Dr. Harrison:
Surgery is scheduled for 8:00 AM sharp tomorrow.
Patient is resting well and in optimal spirits.
See you in the morning,
Mr. Vance.
I smiled,
feeling a profound sense of peace wash over my weary soul.
The battle was won.
May you like
The war was over.
All that remained was standing by the woman who had sacrificed her own body and hair just to keep my memory alive in her heart.
