Chapter 19 - The Surgery and the Rebirth

The operating room doors swung open precisely at 1:30 PM the following afternoon.
Dr. Harrison stepped out into the private waiting area,
his surgical mask pulled down around his neck,
wearing a tired but victorious smile.
I stood up instantly from my chair,
my heart hammering against my ribs.
"How did it go,
Doctor?"
I asked,
my voice tight.
"It went exceptionally well,
Mr. Vance,"
Dr. Harrison announced,
letting out a heavy sigh of relief.
"We successfully removed the entire malignant mass with clean surgical margins,
and the sentinel lymph node biopsy showed no signs of distant metastasis.
The cancer was caught just in time."
I felt as though a mountain had been lifted off my chest.
I closed my eyes for a brief moment,
letting out a shaky breath of pure gratitude.
"Can I see her?"
"She's still recovering in the PACU,"
Dr. Harrison said,
patting my shoulder warmly.
"Give us about an hour to move her to her private recovery suite,
and then you can sit by her side as long as you want."
An hour later,
I walked into Gwen's pristine recovery room.
She was lying against propped pillows,
her face pale but serene,
her eyes opening slowly as I approached the bed.
"Vance..."
she whispered,
her voice trembling slightly.
"It's over,
baby,"
I said,
taking her frail hand and pressing my lips gently against her knuckles.
"The surgeon got it all.
You're cancer-free."
Gwen stared at me,
her eyes welling up with thick, shimmering tears of pure joy,
May you like
and for the first time in four years,
she smiled a true, radiant smile that reached her eyes.
