Chapter 7 - WHISPERS AT THE DOCKS

While Maisie fell asleep wrapped in a cashmere blanket by the fireplace,
Nathaniel led Emma into his private study at the back of the mansion.
The room was lined with dark mahogany bookshelves,
antique globes,
and a massive oak desk covered in encrypted tactical displays.
“Who leaked the cancellation to the restaurant?” Emma asked,
standing by the window overlooking the snowy harbor.
Nathaniel walked over to his desk,
tapping a key on his secure terminal to bring up a security feed.
“My chief of security,
Marcus,
” Nathaniel said coldly,
his jaw tightening.
“He thought my absence from the Boston underworld for a single evening made me vulnerable.
”
“What will you do to him?” Emma asked,
dreading the answer.
“He is already on a cargo freighter bound for South America,
” Nathaniel replied without hesitation.
“Betrayal is the one sin I do not forgive,
Emma.
”
Emma turned around,
hugging her arms against a sudden chill.
“And what about us?” Emma asked,
her voice trembling slightly.
“What happens when tomorrow comes and we have to go back to our real lives?”
Nathaniel walked toward her slowly,
stopping just a foot away.
“Your real life is whatever you want it to be,
Emma,
” Nathaniel said quietly.
“You don't have to worry about rent,
or bills,
or working three jobs at the diner anymore.
”
Emma stepped back,
her pride flaring up like a shield.
“I am not a charity case,
Mr.
Caldwell,
” Emma said fiercely.
“I earn every dollar I make,
and I raised Maisie with my own two hands.
”
“I know you did,
” Nathaniel replied with deep respect in his voice.
“That is why I admire you.
“You didn't bow to my wealth,
and you didn't run from my shadow.
“You treated me like a human being when the entire world treated me like a monster.
”
Emma looked into his gray eyes,
seeing the profound loneliness buried beneath his untouchable empire.

” Emma whispered softly.
