Chapter 16 - THE CELEBRATION AT THE BELLWETHER

Exactly one year to the day after their chance encounter,

the Bellwether restaurant was booked out entirely for a private celebration.

The candlelight flickered against the delicate crystal wine glasses just as it had twelve months before.

This time,

however,

there was no hostess nervously turning people away at the door.

The manager stood by the entrance with a respectful bow as Nathaniel,

Emma,

and seven-year-old Maisie walked inside.

Maisie wore a beautiful white dress with a pink ribbon,

proudly holding the antique silver pocket watch that still ticked faithfully in her pocket.

They walked straight to the exact same corner table where it all began.

The waiter approached immediately,

smiling warmly as he placed a magnificent birthday cake adorned with glowing candles in front of Nathaniel.

“Happy birthday,

Birthday Man!” Maisie cheered,

clapping her hands enthusiastically.

Nathaniel looked across the table at Emma,

whose eyes shone with love and quiet triumph.

“This is the best birthday of my life,

” Nathaniel said softly,

reaching across the table to hold Emma’s hand.

“Every year with you and Maisie will be my birthday.

”

The other diners in the restaurant smiled warmly,

unaware of the dark history and dangerous empire that shadowed the man in the navy suit.

To them,

he was simply a devoted husband and father surrounded by the people he loved most.

Emma squeezed his hand back,

knowing that courage sometimes wears an unexpected face,

and kindness can change the course of destiny in a single second.
