Chapter 4 - THE BEACON HILL SAFEHOUSE

The estate was a fortress disguised as a historic mansion,

surrounding by towering stone walls and ancient oak trees blanketed in pristine white snow.

Armed guards stood silently at every entrance,

their dark silhouettes blending seamlessly into the winter night.

When the car door opened,

one of the guards stepped forward with an umbrella to shield Maisie from the falling snowflakes.

“Welcome to the Caldwell residence,

Mrs.

Walker,

” the guard said with crisp professionalism.

“Mr.

Caldwell will join you shortly.

”

Inside,

the foyer was breathtaking,

featuring a grand marble staircase,

crystal chandeliers that sparkled like frozen stars,

and oil paintings depicting old Boston maritime history.

A middle-aged housekeeper with kind eyes and a warm smile greeted them at the double doors.

“Please,

come inside where it is warm,

” the housekeeper said gently.

“My name is Mrs.

Gable,

and I have prepared hot cocoa with extra marshmallows for the young lady.

”

Maisie’s eyes lit up instantly.

“You have marshmallows?” Maisie asked,

her earlier apprehension completely vanishing.

“The biggest ones in Boston,

” Mrs.

Gable smiled warmly.

Emma looked around the luxurious foyer,

feeling entirely out of place in her faded thrift-store dress.

“We shouldn't be here,

” Emma murmured,

feeling the crushing weight of her ordinary life colliding with extreme wealth.

“Mr.

Caldwell’s orders are absolute,

” Mrs.

Gable replied softly,

leading them into a magnificent drawing room.

“And when Nathaniel brings guests here,

it means he considers them family worth protecting.

”

Before Emma could process the housekeeper's words,

the heavy oak doors at the far end of the room opened.

Nathaniel walked in,

having removed his suit jacket,

his white dress shirt rolled up at the forearms,

revealing strong,

scarred wrists.

There was a faint smudge of soot on his jaw,

and his eyes burned with a fierce,

quiet intensity.

“I see Mrs.

Gable has already won you over with hot cocoa,

” Nathaniel said,

his voice smooth and deep as he approached the fireplace.

Maisie scrambled off the plush sofa,

running across the Persian rug to hand him back his heavy silver pocket watch.

“I guarded it with my life,

Birthday Man,

” Maisie announced solemnly.

Nathaniel knelt down,

taking the watch from her small hands with immense reverence.

“And you did a flawless job,

little bird,

May you like

” Nathaniel smiled,

a genuine warmth breaking through his stern facade.
