Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW IN THE BLACK SUIT

The man in the black suit stood trembling near the mahogany pillar,
his hand still resting near the concealed weapon inside his jacket,
his eyes darting frantically toward the entrance of the restaurant.
Nathaniel Caldwell did not flinch.
He merely set his water glass down with absolute,
terrifying calm,
the ice clinking softly against the crystal.
Emma felt her breath catch in her throat,
her fingers gripping the edge of the linen tablecloth so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Maisie tilted her head,
looking up at the newcomer with innocent curiosity,
completely unaware of the deadly undercurrent vibrating through the air.
“What is wrong,
Mr.
Birthday Man?” Maisie asked softly,
breaking the suffocating silence that had suddenly descended upon our table.
Nathaniel looked away from the terrified operative and fixed his gray eyes gently upon the little girl,
the harsh edges of his formidable persona softening into something protective.
“Nothing is wrong,
little bird,
” Nathaniel replied,
his voice low,
steady,
and rich with a quiet authority that commanded absolute obedience.
“Just an old acquaintance delivering bad news.
”
The operative swallowed hard,
his voice cracking as he leaned closer.
“Boss,
the board at the docks has revolted,
”
the man whispered frantically,
“they intercepted your shipment from Marseille,
and Victor has taken control of the south pier.
”
Nathaniel’s expression remained an unreadable mask of marble,
though the air around him seemed to drop ten degrees.
“Victor thinks ambition is a substitute for patience,
” Nathaniel said coldly,
every syllable dripping with lethal ice.
“He will learn how painful that mistake truly is.
”
Emma stared at the man sitting across from her,
realizing with a jolt of pure adrenaline that the rumors she had heard in Boston were nothing compared to the dark reality of who Nathaniel Caldwell was.
Yet,
looking at the way he protected Maisie’s innocence with his own imposing presence,
May you like
she felt no fear—only a strange,
magnetic pull toward the danger surrounding him.
