Chapter 10 - A DANGEROUS ENCOUNTER

Marcus appeared on the metal catwalk above,

his face twisted in a mask of manic desperation,

holding a small electronic detonator in his trembling hand.

“You think you own everything,

Nathaniel!” Marcus shrieked,

pressing the barrel of a pistol against the terrified accountant's temple.

“You treat us like servants,

while we do all your dirty work!”

“You chose this life,

Marcus,

” Nathaniel replied coldly,

taking another slow step forward to draw attention away from the hostage.

“And you chose to betray the only man who ever fed you.

”

Emma crept silently along the darkened perimeter behind a stack of wooden crates,

her heart pounding against her ribs like a runaway drum.

She saw an alternate metal ladder leading up to the opposite side of the catwalk behind Marcus.

Without thinking,

Emma began climbing the rusty iron rungs,

her hands slipping on the frozen metal.

On the floor below,

Nathaniel kept Marcus talking,

his eyes locked onto the madman's trigger finger.

“Drop the detonator,

Marcus,

” Nathaniel warned softly,

his gun raised with absolute precision.

“You won't shoot while your accountant is breathing,

” Marcus laughed hysterically.

Suddenly,

Emma appeared at the top of the catwalk behind Marcus,

her breath pluming in the freezing air.

Before Marcus realized he wasn't alone,

Emma swung the heavy metal flashlight with all her might,

smashing it squarely across the back of his head.

Marcus screamed,

stumbling forward as the detonator flew from his limp fingers.

Nathaniel fired his weapon with lightning speed,

shooting the gun out of Marcus's hand before the traitor could recover.

Within seconds,

Nathaniel's tactical team swarmed the catwalk,

pinning Marcus to the cold steel floor and cutting Vance free.
