Chapter 2 - THE SILENT WAR OUTSIDE

The restaurant manager hurried over,

his face pale with sweat as he recognized the dangerous men congregating near the entrance.

“Mr.

Caldwell,

” the manager stammered,

bowing slightly out of sheer terror,

“we are deeply honored by your presence,

and we apologize for any inconvenience tonight.

”

Nathaniel raised a single finger,

and the manager froze instantly.

“The reservation mix-up,

” Nathaniel said quietly,

his eyes fixed on the trembling restaurant owner,

“was that an accident,

or was it arranged?”

The manager’s eyes widened in sheer panic.

“I swear to you,

Mr.

Caldwell,

it was a system error,

” the manager gasped,

“somebody using your corporate credentials called to cancel it at five o'clock.

”

“Corporate credentials,

” Nathaniel repeated,

a dangerous smile touching the corners of his lips,

“only three people in my inner circle have clearance to use those credentials.

”

He stood up slowly,

towering over the table with an imposing grace that made the neighboring diners lower their eyes in instinctive submission.

“Emma,

” Nathaniel said,

turning his gaze toward her with surprising gentleness,

“finish your meal with Maisie.

”

“You’re leaving?” Maisie asked,

her lower lip trembling slightly.

“I have to take care of some unfinished business,

” Nathaniel answered,

kneeling down so he was at eye level with the little girl,

“but I promised you birthday cake,

and I always keep my promises.

”

He pulled a heavy,

antique silver pocket watch from his vest pocket,

flipped open the lid,

and handed it to Maisie.

“Hold this for me until I return,

” Nathaniel whispered,

“it’s a symbol of trust.

”

Maisie’s eyes lit up with wonder as she accepted the heavy silver heirloom,

clutching it tightly in her small hands.

“Okay,

” Maisie agreed solemnly,

“you better come back,

or I’ll keep your watch forever.

”

Nathaniel chuckled,

a deep,

resonant sound that seemed entirely out of place in a room filled with fear,

before turning and walking out into the freezing Boston night.

Emma watched him go,

May you like

her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird,

knowing that her life had irrevocably changed the moment she allowed her daughter to invite the most feared man in New England to their table.
