Chapter 2

The heavy, soundproofed oak doors of the adjoining council room clicked open.
Domenico Falcone stepped out into the bright, vivid light of the atrium. He was thirty-three years old and as handsome as a classic movie star, exuding a powerful, deeply masculine aura that was distinctly Mafia Boss-like. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, but a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his forehead, giving him a charming, almost romantic look that starkly contrasted with his lethal nature. His angular face featured a high-bridged nose and a sharply defined jawline, shadowed by an extremely short, neatly trimmed layer of stubble on his fair, rosy skin.
He wore a dark, tailored suit, but the dress shirt beneath it was unbuttoned at the chest, revealing the edge of artistic, refined tattoos. The ink crept up the side of his neck and extended down across his hands and fingers. The designs were sharp and elegant, utilizing enough negative space so they didn't look dense or overwhelming. The neck tattoos were moderate and neatly placed, cultivating a look that was undeniably attractive, yet deeply, dangerously intimidating.
His cold, sharp eyes immediately scanned the room, bypassing the wealthy guests and the elaborate decorations. His gaze snapped instantly to the floor beside the head table.
He saw Ruby.
Domenico did not run, nor did he shout. He moved with a terrifying, predatory calmness. The crowd of white American bodyguards and associates instinctively parted, creating a wide, silent path for the patriarch. He closed the distance in a matter of seconds, his polished leather shoes making no sound against the thick carpet.
He reached the table and immediately knelt, his pristine trousers brushing the floor. His large, tattooed hands—hands that commanded one of the most violent syndicates in the country—were impossibly gentle as he lifted the crying three-year-old into his arms. He stood up, cradling Ruby against his broad chest, his suit absorbing her tears.
"I've got you, little bird," Domenico murmured, his voice a low, steady rumble that vibrated through his chest.
Ruby buried her face into his neck, her small frame shaking violently. She sniffled, her fair skin blotchy from crying, and slowly lifted a trembling, tiny finger. She did not point at Valentina. Instead, she pointed past the grand staircase, toward the upstairs hallway overlooking the atrium.
Lined up perfectly along the upper railing were several large, expensive travel suitcases.
Ruby clung tighter to his unbuttoned shirt, her voice breaking into a breathless, agonized sob that shattered the dead silence of the grand room.

"Daddy…" Ruby cried, her voice cracking with profound heartbreak. "She packed my room too."
Domenico froze. His eyes slowly traveled up to the second-floor landing, registering the luggage that contained every belonging his daughter owned. His jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his stubble. The air in the room seemed to turn to ice, the cinematic, bright lighting suddenly feeling like the harsh glare of an interrogation room.
