Chapter 28 - Maya Retires

Maya retired after thirty-four years teaching.
Students filled auditorium.
She hated speeches.
One former student said:
“Ms. Torres always believed us.”
Maya corrected from stage:
“I listened to you. Belief came after listening and evidence.”
Everyone laughed.
Still precise.
Caleb attended.
Brought flowers.
“No cable?” she asked.
He gave her one.
A red USB cable as joke.
She nearly threw it.
Then kept it.
At dinner they talked about Classroom 214.
Not much.
Mostly retirement.
Travel.
Grandchildren.
Caleb said:
“People still call you hero?”
“Sometimes.”
“Hate it?”
“Less.”
“Why?”
“I finally understand they're describing what action meant to them, not who I have to be forever.”
Caleb smiled.
That was mature.
“Hero.”
May you like
She kicked him under table.
Perfect.
