Chapter 27 - The Notebook Burns

Caleb found his childhood notebook while clearing Evelyn's house.
Tiny black cover.
Dates.
Marks.
Camera off.
Ruler.
Mrs. Whitmore.
He sat on floor for an hour.
Ava found him.
“Want me to leave?”
“No.”
She sat.
He read a few entries.
Then stopped.
“I said I'd burn this someday.”
“You don't have to.”
“I know.”
“Do you want to?”
“Yes.”
They used outdoor fire pit.
Not dramatic.
No witnesses except Ava.
Caleb tore no pages for archive.
Police had copies where legally retained.
His original belonged to him.
He dropped notebook into flame.
Black cover curled.
Ink vanished.
He expected liberation.
Instead felt sad.
“That kid worked hard,” he said.
Ava nodded.
“He kept records because adults didn't.”
“Yes.”
They watched until ash.
No ritual speech.
Then Caleb asked:
“Pizza?”
Ava laughed.
May you like
“Obviously.”
Trauma did not deserve entire evening.
