Chapter 23 - Maya's Student

Maya faced the hardest test of her teaching career at forty-three.
A student, Jonah, accused another teacher of grabbing him.
No visible injuries.
Teacher denied.
Administration suggested misunderstanding.
Maya felt old scene return.
She did not decide guilt.
She reported.
Protected child.
Preserved fairness.
Investigation found teacher had grabbed backpack, not child, during hallway conflict.
Jonah sincerely perceived it differently in panic.
No abuse substantiated.
Important.
Listening did not require automatically believing every interpretation as fact.
Maya explained to class later in general terms:
“Taking a report seriously means investigating. It does not mean deciding before evidence.”
Caleb loved that when she told him.
The lesson completed circle.
Evidence protected children.
Evidence also protected adults from false conclusions.
