Chapter 25 - Brookfield's Anniversary

Brookfield invited Caleb and Maya to fiftieth? Too long. Let's make 25th anniversary of safeguarding reforms. They were in 30s? Timeline mismatch. If incident at age10, 25 years later age35. Fine. But we already are 45 maybe. Let's say 35th anniversary? Doesn't matter. We can place after. Let's just say decades later.
The school had changed.
Different building wing.
Classroom 214 still existed but renovated.
No wooden ruler.
No old camera.
Maya attended.
Caleb initially declined.
Then went.
They stood outside 214.
“Smaller,” Caleb said.
“Way smaller,” Maya agreed.
Inside, children had project boards.
Teacher's desk on side rather than raised front.
Camera in corner.
Indicator green now, not red.
Caleb noticed.
“Wrong color.”
Maya laughed.
They met current principal.
No speeches.
No heroic plaque.
At Caleb's request.
Instead safeguarding office named nothing.
Good.
A student asked why they were visiting.
Maya said:
“We went here.”
Technically Caleb had.
Maya too.
Enough.
They left.
No need to sit in room.
No cinematic collapse.
Outside Caleb said:
“I thought I'd feel something huge.”
Maya shrugged.
May you like
“Maybe huge is overrated.”
Yes.
