Chapter 17 - The Board Files

Years after investigations, Brookfield released old board files.
Evelyn found something unexpected.
Martin had objected to Dr. Price's original proposal.
Meeting minutes:
Mr. Hawthorne expressed concern that "behavioral privacy" could shield staff misconduct and requested external review.
Evelyn stared.
Her father had seen risk.
Then three months later voted yes after Mercer assured safeguards.
What changed?
Funding pressure.
Enrollment.
Parent complaints.
Convenience.
Martin remembered.
“I should've trusted my first instinct.”
Evelyn asked:
“Why didn't you?”
“Alan said I was overreacting.”
Irony.
Martin Hawthorne had once been dismissed as too cautious.
Then became defender.
People changed gradually.
Not fixed roles.
The files also showed Evelyn's mother, Margaret Hawthorne, had pushed for program because she believed children were becoming “too entitled.”
Evelyn had rarely discussed her.
Margaret died before Caleb was born.
Another influence.
Family attitudes predated Martin.
No single origin.
Caleb read selected files as adult.
He did not care who first proposed what.
“Everybody keeps looking for first domino.”
Evelyn smiled.
“What do you think?”
May you like
“Just stop lining them up.”
Good.
