Chapter 26 - Evelyn's Last Apology

Evelyn was seventy-eight when she apologized one last time.
Caleb rolled his eyes.
“Mom.”
“I know.”
“You've apologized.”
“Yes.”
“Then stop.”
She laughed.
“I want to say something different.”
He waited.
“I spent years apologizing for signing the paper.”
“Yes.”
“But I think the worse thing was before that.”
“What?”
“You told me Mrs. Whitmore hurt you.”
Caleb remembered.
Barely.
“You said your arm hurt. I asked what you did to make her angry.”
Silence.
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“I made you explain your behavior before I asked whether an adult had crossed a line.”
Caleb looked down.
“That sounds like you then.”
“Yes.”
“And not now.”
“No.”
He took her hand.
“Okay.”
“Is that forgiveness?”
“Mom.”
She laughed through tears.
“No legal language?”
“None.”
She died two years later peacefully.
