Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

Later that evening,
after the children had finally fallen into a deep,
peaceful sleep untroubled by nightmares or locked doors,
I sat alone in my private study on the third floor.
The mahogany desk was cluttered with old case files,
encrypted intelligence reports,
and the personal journals of my late wife,
Elena.
Elena’s death two years ago had been officially ruled an accidental drowning at our private lake house in the Berkshires.
The local police,
heavily influenced by bribes and political pressure from the Vale family,
had closed the investigation within forty-eight hours.
At the time,
I had been overseas dismantling a cartel network that threatened our shipping lanes,
grieving from afar while trusting local authorities to uncover the truth.
Now,
with Vanessa’s sudden infiltration of my estate shortly after the funeral,
the puzzle pieces were snapping together with terrifying clarity.
A soft knock sounded at the heavy oak door of my study.
“Enter,
” I said without looking up from the journal.
Grace stepped into the study,
carrying a silver tray with a cup of dark,
rich black coffee.
She set it gently on the corner of the desk before standing respectfully at attention.
“The children are asleep,
sir,
” Grace reported in her calm,
measured tone.
“Caleb didn't let go of his rabbit once,
and Sophie asked if you would read to them tomorrow morning.
” “I will,
” I replied,
finally lifting my gaze to look at her.
“Grace,
you’ve been working in this estate for less than a month,
yet you saw through Vanessa’s facade faster than my own intelligence network did.
” Grace lowered her eyes slightly in modest acknowledgment.
“When you grow up in the foster system,
Mr.
Whitaker,
you learn to spot monsters wearing human skin very early in life.
Miss Vale thought she could hide her cruelty behind designer clothes and charitable smiles.
But cruelty leaves a distinct smell that money can't wash away.
” I nodded slowly,
respecting her acute perception and unwavering bravery.
“Tell me,
Grace,
did you notice anything unusual about Elena’s passing before you started working here?
Did anyone mention the Vale family's involvement?
” Grace’s expression tightened into a hard line.
“Actually,
sir,
that’s why I applied for the housekeeper position in the first place.
My sister used to work as a cook in the Vale household.
She overheard Senator Vale and Vanessa discussing your late wife’s estate weeks before the tragic accident occurred.
” My blood ran cold as I gripped the edges of the mahogany desk.
“Go on.
” “They weren't just planning a marriage,
Mr.
Whitaker,
” Grace whispered grimly.
May you like
“They were planning a hostile takeover of the entire Whitaker syndicate from the inside out.
