Chapter 3 - Grace’s Silent Shield

While the video recording continued to broadcast Vanessa’s ruthless cruelty across the terrace speakers,

my attention shifted downward.

Grace Miller,

the new housekeeper who had taken the full force of the brutal slap meant for my daughter,

was still standing quietly near the shattered glassware.

The left side of her face was bruised,

a stark,

angry red imprint of Vanessa’s heavy rings swelling visibly across her pale cheek.

Yet Grace wasn't cowering or hiding behind anyone.

Her chin was held high,

her eyes fixed steadily on me with a quiet,

unwavering dignity that commanded respect.

“Grace,

” I said,

my tone softening slightly as I addressed the brave woman who had risked her livelihood—and potentially her life—to protect my flesh and blood.

Grace dipped her head respectfully toward me.

“Mr.

Whitaker.

I couldn't stand by and watch innocent children hurt by someone meant to care for them.

Not after what I saw happening behind closed doors every single night.

” “You said you had been sleeping outside their bedroom door for six nights,

” I noted,

remembering her words from moments before with a sharp pang of guilt.

“Why did you do that?

” Grace glanced down gently at Sophie and Caleb,

who were now peeking shyly from behind my legs.

“Because on your seventh day undercover,

Mr.

Whitaker,

Miss Vale dismissed the night nurse and locked the children in the west wing without dinner,

” Grace explained clearly,

her voice cutting through the whispers of the stunned guests.

“I knew the cameras were recording everything,

but I also knew cameras can't physically stop a hand from striking a terrified child.

So I packed a blanket and slept on the floor outside their nursery every single night.

I checked their locks,

I listened for their nightmares,

and I made sure they knew someone in this mausoleum still cared about their well-being.

” A heavy wave of guilt washed over me,

pressing down harder than any burden I had ever carried in the underworld.

I had been so focused on gathering absolute legal and social evidence to destroy Vanessa’s powerful family dynasty that I had allowed my children to suffer another week of terror.

I knelt down in front of Grace,

looking directly into her tired,

compassionate eyes.

“You risked everything for my children,

Grace,

” I said firmly,

ensuring every word carried absolute weight.

“In this house,

and in every business I own,

your word is law second only to mine.

Marcus,

ensure Miss Miller’s bank accounts are credited with five million dollars immediately,

tax-free,

as a token of my eternal gratitude.

And from this moment forward,

she is no longer a housekeeper.

She is the Director of Household Operations and Guardian Supervisor.

” Grace’s eyes widened in stunned disbelief.

“Sir.

.

.

that’s.

.

.

that’s far too much.

” “Nothing is too much for someone who bled for my blood,

May you like

” I replied,

standing back up and turning my gaze back toward the ruined socialite.
