Chapter 12 - The Trial of the Century

Six months after the fateful charity brunch,
the federal corruption trial against Senator Arthur Vale and his associates commenced in the Hartford federal courthouse.
The media dubbed it the trial of the decade,
as the once-untouchable political dynasty was systematically dismantled piece by piece.
I did not attend the courtroom in person; my presence was unnecessary,
as the digital ledgers,
encrypted audio files,
and financial wire records provided by my syndicate ensured an airtight prosecution.
Instead,
I watched the live broadcast from my private study while Sophie and Caleb played peacefully on the rug with their building blocks.
On the massive screen,
Senator Arthur Vale—looking gaunt,
aged,
and broken—was led away in handcuffs after receiving a mandatory thirty-year sentence without parole for racketeering,
bribery,
and financial embezzlement.
Vanessa Vale,
tried separately in state court for domestic endangerment,
fraud,
and conspiracy,
received a fifteen-year sentence in a maximum-security federal correctional facility.
Her high-society friends were nowhere to be found.
The designers,
the donors,
the politicians,
and the socialites who had once fawned over her presence now pretended they had never even known her name.
The gavel slammed down on the television broadcast,
signaling the final closure of a dark chapter in our lives.
I turned off the screen,
the silence in the study peaceful and absolute.
Grace entered quietly,
holding a tray of fresh tea.
“It’s over,
then?
” she asked,
setting the tray down on the mahogany desk.
“It’s over,
” I confirmed,
looking up at her with a grateful nod.
“The courts have rendered their judgment,
the debts have been collected,
and our home is completely free of their shadow.
” Grace smiled,
her expression serene.
“Then perhaps it’s time to celebrate with a proper family dinner in the garden tonight.
” “Agreed,
” I replied,
May you like
standing up and walking over to join my children on the rug,
ready to build the tallest Lego tower Connecticut had ever seen.
