Chapter 14 - Shadows on the Horizon

Even in absolute peace,
a man who commands an empire of shadows must always keep one eye on the horizon.
Two years after the downfall of the Vale dynasty,
a cryptic dossier arrived on my private desk in the underground war room.
It bore no return address,
no official government stamp,
and no digital watermark.
Inside was a single photograph and a handwritten note in Latin.
The photograph showed an old,
abandoned warehouse in the industrial district of Boston—a warehouse that had once belonged to a rival syndicate I dismantled a decade ago.
The Latin note translated simply: *The seed of the viper still sleeps in the garden.
* I stared at the photograph for a long moment,
my tactical instincts instantly snapping into sharp focus.
Marcus stepped into the war room seconds later,
his face grim.
“Boss,
our intelligence nodes in Boston just flagged encrypted chatter originating from an overseas burner phone.
It seems a distant cousin of Arthur Vale has been quietly buying up liquidated assets and trying to probe our shipping networks.
” “They think they can rebuild what the Vales lost,
” I stated coldly,
leaning back in my leather chair.
“They’re operating under the delusion that enough time has passed for them to test our defenses.
” “Shall I send a strike team to clear the warehouse tonight?
” Marcus asked,
his hand resting on his holster.
“No,
” I replied,
shaking my head with a calculated smirk.
“Let them come to Connecticut.
Let them think they can slip past our gates.
Let them walk right into the trap.
” I stood up,
buttoning my suit jacket with absolute calm.
“This estate is no longer a vulnerable target,
Marcus.
It is a fortress.
