Chapter 9: The Face of the Enemy

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

My hands refused to stop shaking.

The person standing beside Lily looked like me.

Not similar.

Not close.

Me.

Same height.

Same hair.

Same face.

Same scar above my eyebrow.

The scar I got when Ethan pushed me off my bicycle when we were children.

The scar nobody could copy.

Except someone had.

Or someone had made me believe they could.

“What is this?”” Vanessa whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had an answer.

The room that had already been filled with impossible truths had just become something worse.

A nightmare.

I looked at my mother.

“You knew?””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Could someone fake this?””

He stared at the image.

“I don’t know.””

That answer made me angrier.

“You don’t know?””

“Adrian, listen to me. Whoever is behind this has been planning for years.””

I held up the phone.

“They’re showing me someone who looks exactly like me.””

Ethan’s face was tense.

“Then we need to understand why.””

A sudden sound came from outside.

A car engine.

Everyone turned.

Clara immediately moved toward the window.

But before she reached it, my mother spoke.

“Don’t.””

Her voice was different.

Not afraid.

Certain.

“Why?””

She looked at the window.

“Because they want us to look.””

The words made everyone stop.

“What do you mean?””

My mother took a slow breath.

“Fear makes people predictable.””

I stared at her.

“Since when do you know how they think?””

Pain crossed her face.

“Since I survived them.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she walked toward the table.

Toward the photograph.

She picked it up.

Her fingers trembled.

“This is not real.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because Lily never stood beside him.””

The room went quiet.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“Adrian, your wife knew something was wrong with the person closest to her.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Who?””

She looked at the photograph again.

“She wasn’t afraid of a stranger.””

A pause.

“She was afraid of someone wearing your name.””

The sentence chilled me.

I remembered Lily’s final days.

The strange moments I ignored.

The times she looked at me like she wanted to say something but stopped.

The night before she died.

She had held my hand.

She had stared at me for a long time.

I thought she was afraid of dying.

But what if she was afraid of something else?

“What did she tell you?”” I asked my mother.

My mother looked down.

“She told me Adrian was changing.””

I frowned.

“Changing?””

“She said you were becoming colder.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“Because she wasn’t talking about you.””

A chill moved through me.

“She was talking about someone pretending to be you.””

Nobody moved.

Then Clara suddenly gasped.

“What?””

Everyone looked at her.

She covered her mouth.

“I remember something.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Two months before Lily died…”

Her voice became quiet.

“She asked me if I noticed anything different about you.””

My heart stopped.

“What did you say?””

“I told her you were grieving. You were stressed. You had Emma. You had the company.””

“And what did she say?””

Clara swallowed.

“She said…”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“She said, ‘That’s what he wants everyone to think.’”

The room felt colder.

I turned toward the stairs.

Toward the bedroom.

Toward the life I thought I knew.

“How long?””

Everyone looked at me.

“How long has someone been pretending?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Longer than Lily knew.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

He reached into his coat.

He pulled out another piece of paper.

Old.

Folded.

“I found this after Lily died.””

My anger returned.

“You had more?””

His face tightened.

“I didn’t understand it until now.””

I snatched it from him.

It was Lily’s handwriting.

Only a few words.

*If Adrian starts acting different, do not confront him. Run.*

My heart sank.

Below it was another line.

*The copy is dangerous because even he doesn’t know he’s the copy.*

I stared at the sentence.

“What does that mean?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

My mother whispered:

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

“Your father discovered something before he died.””

“What?””

She looked at me.

“A program.””

I frowned.

“What kind of program?””

“A way to manipulate identity.””

Silence.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

My mother sat down.

“Richard was obsessed with control. He believed people were nothing more than memories and habits.””

I felt sick.

“He wanted to replace people?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

She looked at me.

“Someone who could imitate them.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“No.””

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, that’s impossible.””

My mother looked at her.

“You knew this existed.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I knew Richard was dangerous. I didn’t know this.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You really didn’t?””

She met my eyes.

For once, she looked completely broken.

“No.””

And somehow, I believed her.

Not because I trusted her.

Because fear was impossible to fake.

A noise came from downstairs.

A door closing.

Everyone froze.

Clara whispered:

“Someone is inside.””

I moved toward the staircase.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“No.””

“That’s my house.””

“And that’s exactly why they know where you’ll go.””

I pulled away.

“No more hiding.””

I walked downstairs.

Everyone followed.

The living room was empty.

But something had changed.

The photograph of my family was gone.

The one showing my mother alive.

The one proving everything.

Only one thing remained on the table.

A small voice recorder.

I picked it up.

Pressed play.

Static.

Then Lily’s voice.

My entire body froze.

“Adrian.””

My knees almost weakened.

Her voice.

After all these years.

“I don’t know when you’ll hear this.””

A shaky breath.

“But if you’re listening, something went wrong.””

I closed my eyes.

“Lily…”

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

A pause.

“The person you trust most is not the enemy.””

Everyone looked at each other.

Then Lily said:

“The person who looks like Adrian is not the danger.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

Her voice became urgent.

“The real danger is the person who made him believe he was Adrian.””

The recording crackled.

Then her final words came.

“Find the original Adrian before they find Emma.””

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone had heard the same thing.

Original Adrian.

Not me.

Not the person standing here.

Something inside me broke.

I looked at my hands.

My reflection in the glass.

My face.

My life.

Everything I had ever known.

What if it was built on something false?

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke at first.

Only breathing.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Adrian.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it better than anyone.

It was my voice.

“Who is this?””

A quiet laugh.

Then:

“The question is…”

A pause.

“Who are you?””

The call ended.

At the exact same moment, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man walked inside.

He looked at me.

Same face.

Same scar.

Same eyes.

He was wearing the same watch I wore.

The same jacket.

The same ring.

My ring.

He looked at Emma.

Then at me.

And said:

“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””

My entire body went cold.

Because the stranger standing in my house…

Looked exactly like me.

May you like

And he said the words I never expected to hear.

“I’m the real Adrian.””
